Atomic Floyd SuperDarts - brilliant for both noise reduction and sound. Very expensive (to me anyway) but they cannot be faulted as far as I am concerned. I couldn't face a trip on public transport without them anyway.

I can't wear "in ear" phones which might be what you mean. Too uncomfy.

I use these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004 ... UTF8&psc=1

bought on the strength of the very positive reviews. With them I can hear stuff that was never there before.

For in ear phones, I spent a while with cheap sennheisers which gave good sound - not nearly as good as the ones above tho.

Reading the reviews for the above phones gives a good overview of the market.

Only snag is I now have to upgrade my mp3 collection - anything below 192 I can really hear the "gaps", so I'm having to go for 320 or flac.

I think this is the exact model, but there's a couple others that look the same in the jvc xx line:

http://www.amazon.com/JVC-HAFX1X-Headph ... nes+jvc+xx

The cable is very thick copper vs. any other headphones I've ever seen, so it hangs loose and doesn't tangle, and they wrap up nicely around an mp3 player or just in a coil. I've had them for more than a year. The only thing I've damaged (during cleaning) is the little foam/mesh screens inside the buds - but they still work perfectly fine.

I buy these cheap RCA earbuds. $5 and I get pretty good quality earbuds.

There are two different kinds: Ones with the jack that's completely straight and ones with a jack that has a firm, squared base. The latter is much more useful due to it's durability.

I use the ones what clip around the ear, because it keeps them in place. They also wrap neatly around my MP3 and fit in my bag.

At home I use the big ones that go round the top of your head.

Klipsch IMAGE S4 in-ear headphones for commuting and Audio-Technica ATH-M50S Professional Studio Monitor Headphones for at home. Terrific sound quality from both, and reasonably priced (although the price seems to have gone up a little on both since I bought mine). I used to wear cheap headphones or ear buds, and didn't know what I was missing until I switched. I honestly discovered parts of songs that cheaper ear buds and headphones simply could not reproduce.

I use the Playstation Vita earbuds at home:

And I use JLAB J3 earbuds for traveling, because they have a carry case.

earphones won't stay put in my ear canals, they are made only for folks with relatively small ears. i have to use sony megabass A10s as they have a headband that keeps them on my head.

my sony A10 units are usable because of the adjustable graphic eq function on my phillips vibe mp3 player which lets me surgically correct their frequency response errors. after this equalization they produce adequate bass and treble and are fairly flat.

only when i am doing actual audio editing do i wear anything more substantial than the sony A10s, my work headphones [audio editing] are sennheiser hd580 precisions, which have enough transparency for me to be able to hear into a mix.
