I've heard that a lot of people on the spectrum have a tendency to monologue--lack of understanding of social rituals leading to one-sided conversations. But I don't see this in myself; rather the opposite. I'm hyper-aware of social rules but I'm deathly afraid of mucking up; I did monologue for a while when I was small, but I learned pretty early on that you just don't go around doing this. So I go mute instead, even when I have a strong opinion about something. So are you a monologuer or a mutist? Or a bit of both?

I tend to just stay quiet. Even if I have strong views on a subject, unless I'm in a comfortable setting, I'll generally shut up.

Mutist, no one cares. Even if they did I'm now too shy to just bring it up, some one else needs to open me up.

Mostly I go very quiet rather then say something just to say something or if the discussion is about something I am not interested in, do not know about , or new people. I have cut down on monologue. When it does happen it happens after being quiet for so long once I start talking I can't stop and it is with people I am comfortable with. I have cut down on it a lot and forums and awareness are reasons. Forums give me a outlet.

In real life? I go quiet and don't speak much, if at all.

On the internet? I ramble

I don't know why the different responses.

On saying that, should someone seem ok with it, I can ramble in real life too. But after bad experiences I tend to err on the side of caution and go quiet instead.

A bit of both, I think. I tend to stay pretty quiet unless something really gets me going on a topic I'm interested in. In those cases, I don't really monologue, but I keep wanting to direct the conversation back to the topic in question.

"Mutist". I'm generally uninterested in conversing, so I only say anything to briefly answer direct questions, or if I need something specific. I sound almost like someone with alogia most of the time. I can monologue too, though. But only if someone pressures me into it, or if I get sidetracked and start voicing my thoughts, forgetting that there's a person in front of me.

I usually avoid talking, but if I'm in a situation where it's expected, I ask questions that provoke long responses.

Both. Largely mute until relatively relaxed with the company I'm spending time with, then given the opportunity to talk about something I am passionate about... I monologue/infodump like a walking Aspie stereotype. *Cringe!* I find it hard to maintain anything in between for long - It's exhausting!

Monologue. People don't generally allow me to stay quiet, they ask questions. I've been trying to learn how to be quiet lately because oftentimes I just want to listen to everyone else but usually people ask me a question and either I end up telling amusing stories about something or saying something that makes everyone go quiet and feel awkward. I find it easier to have a normal conversation in one to one setting although I prefer a three-way conversation because it gives me a chance to have a break and also to double check my thinking and opinions.

I monologue when I am talking about work but, otherwise, I usually come across as very quiet.

I'm definitely more of a mutist. I am quiet most of the time, though I will occasionally be in just the right mood where I start rambling about whatever is on my mind. I don't think it ever really gets to the point of monologuing, though.
