I just saw the following article on an alleged correlation between being left-handed and being schizophrenic:

http://atlanta.cbslocal.com/2013/10/31/ ... zophrenia/

While I'm not schizophrenic in the least, I am very aspie, and very left-handed. Is it possible there is a correlation between ASD's and being left-handed? I'm curious as to how many of us are left-handed. Anybody care to share?

I'm a righty BUT I meet all the 'criteria' for a lefty and have clear memories of being forced in school and at home to write and throw with my right hand. Baseball we had a choice and I can only bat left (but only throw right) which was extremely rare where I played to the point I think I was the only player who did it.

I'm left handed, and yes, there is some correlation.

I am a left-handed Aspie.
This is my first interaction, on W P.
I am wondering what the "BBCode" refers to.
Many thanks -

Welcome. If you are looking for a place to be anti-social with others, you've come to the right place.

From the study:

Quote:
Abstract

The human brain develops asymmetrically, such that certain cognitive processes arise predominantly from the left or right side. It has been proposed that variations in this laterality contribute to certain forms of mental illness, such as schizophrenia. A convenient measure of brain laterality is hand dominance, and prior work has found that patients with schizophrenia are more likely to be left-handed than the general population. This finding is not consistent, however, and fewer studies have directly compared handedness between psychiatric diagnoses. We assessed hand dominance in 107 patients presenting to an outpatient psychiatric clinic with diagnoses of a mood or psychotic disorder. The prevalence of left-handedness was 11% for mood disorders, which is similar to the rate in the general population. It was 40% in those with psychotic disorders (adjusted odds ratio = 7.9, p < .001). The prevalence of left-handedness was much higher in psychotic disorders compared with mood disorders in this community mental health sample.

Fnord, the article actually acknowledged as much by noting the small sample size. It is why I decided to hold an informal, empirical poll here. Having said this, you didn't say which hand you favor.

What if you have ambidexterity? That actually seems more schizophrenic.

I'm certainly no expert on such things, so I can't say if there is such a thing as a truly ambidextrous person. I am reasonably certain that all of us left-handers are ambidextrous, at least to some degree; we have to be in this right-handed world.

For me it varies depending on the task. With my left hand I can produce mostly legible if awkward writing. I can read it and some other people can. With my right it's pretty much hopeless.

I can use a mouse with either hand about as well (have always kept the mouse on opposing sides at work and at home). I think I'm also a little better with my right hand for things that require more strength than precision.
