It seems I can only live in the moment. This has it's good and bad qualities. While I am able to not dwell on the past or worry about the future the way most people do (which I will never understand why). I also have trouble learning from the past or planning for the future. It can be difficult to understand how event connect to each other.

I'm always 20 years in the future, although I do spend some time in the present. I think it's got something to do with ADHD. We're not good planners but we make the best of the moment. I don't remember any of the science to it but umm...yeah.

Regrettably one of the problems of living in the moment is that it tends to mess up the next moment.

But the good news is that you tend not to obsess about your behaviour.

Not that any of us are a bit OCD or anything 8O

On the other hand, living too much in the future means that you mess up the current moment. :).

I spend so much time anticipating the future that it's always a letdown when it happens--because I'd built it up so much in my head about how it was going to be.

If you can only live within a short moment it could totally explain why you don't understand or experience more complex emotions that other people have.

How's your short-term or working memory? Do you knowingly have any deficits there?
What about more general problems with your long-term memory? Can you recall events of the past if you without much problem? Like if I asked you what you did yesterday, can you come up with something?

I have to say that this along with your other thread, despite that I still feel sorry for you even though you don't for yourself (deal with it, I'm going to be that way), I'm starting to think of you as a rather fascinating person I want to study :-p

What about reading? Can you, say, read a magazine article and keep what it said at the beginning in mind all the way to the end of the article? Can you keep complex ideas or theories in mind from a field of study you might be interested in? Like a mathematical proof, or a journal article?

Good point as well. Also could it be a form of Dissociative disorder?

My short term memory is often not so good.
I do have excellent long term memory. I even remember my 2nd birthday vividly. I remember the day after not understanding it wasn't my birthday anymore.
I have photographic memory and remember most things I see.
I often have a hard time remembering conversations and things like that though. I remember everything I saw though but the content of what was going on is lost.

As for reading, I am not good and remembering. Even reading things here I have to read things several times. I know my reading comprehension is not so good. I remember in those tests in school where I had to read and report on what I read, I could never answer. I seem to hold on up to a page alright, but I am actually not good at reading at all.

I do dwell on stupid things I have done or said in the past, but also I do learn from those things. Like I used to go on and on about my obsessions to my friends at school, to the point where I got called ''sad'', and lost all my friends (I didn't have many to lose anyway, but you know what I mean). After that, I suddenly learnt not to talk about obsessions so much to people, only in small doses and keeping it casual, so that they won't guess that I'm obsessed. Like every human, I am entitled to have interests in anything I want. It's just how you express it what can be the problem, not so much what it actually is.

I can block out my worries about the future, thank God. I know things look bleak now, but I do believe in the saying ''you never know what's around the corner''. There could be another hurricane next week and I could have a tree fall on me and kill me. I could win the lottery next week and be a millionaire. Someone new could start at my work next week and I could become best friends with them. You don't know. I worry more about the not-too-distant future, like tomorrow or in the next few days. Sometimes next month. Sometimes the next season. Sometimes next year. But not too far into the future, like when I'm 40.

I wish I could live in the moment. I believe I would be so much happier.

Usually am in the moment. When I am not, am thinking of previous experiences.
