I don't really mean spirit but I don't know how else to phrase it.

I can think of a crowded situation on a busy noisy, smelly, hot, loud street where without chemical assistance I somehow detach from my body and drift around. Like I will accidentally mentally fixate on some small detail and before I know it I am no longer attached to my body and not even sure where I am really, I can sometimes walk for a while before drifting back into my body.

It is a really strange experience and I don't know how to describe it well, I dislike it.

i think i know what you mean, i experience something simular.
what you described is a mental defence mechanism, you are getting overstimulated and to prevent getting a meltdown your brain disconnects itself from the stimulated senses.

i have experienced this state often enough that i can prevent, stop and even summon it at will

Yeah, it's called dissociation. It's not surprising you would have it in an overwhelming situation like a crowd.

Yeah, I get like this, too. I need to dissociate from the situation mentally; otherwise, I think the overload issues would drive me through the roof.

I also do this when I'm doing something repetitive and boring, like being on the elliptical machine.

I know it too.
In malls, I sometimes find myself in a floating state, where things seems to be passing me and not the other way around.
Very far away, I can sense my feet walking, but the rest isn´there. I am totally in my head.
It is not unpleasant and stops the second I go outside. It usually starts with the normal sound hierarchy falling apart, so it must be a protection against overload.

Happened to me big time when I was 17yo and about to graduate from high school and super stressed about what I was going to do next and for my future etc. At the time I didn't know what was happening and it was really scary. Since then I've learned about depersonalization/disassociation and that it's the 3rd most common mental health affliction after depression & anxiety. It hasn't really happened since, or at least not to that extent anyways, but if it does I know it's only temporary and I just have to ride it out.
