Is this an example of having problems with theory of mind?
I'm reading my favorite book again (To Kill a Mockingbird) and while reading the scene of Tom's trial the judge said "The Jury will disregard that comment." after someone shouted in support of the defendant. I started thinking. If I had to make a decision about something and I heard information that would influence that decision, I don't think I could disregard that information and make the same decision I would have if I hadn't heard it.
Another thing I heard was in the movie Gamers 2 (movie about role playing games) Someone brought up gamer knowledge vs character knowledge. I don't understand how players can make decisions as if they were the characters when the players have knowledge that the characters don't have. How do they play that character as if they don't have that knowledge without letting the knowledge they actually do have influence their characters actions?
I think this is why I don't like role playing games. lol

I think in the first case, the jury has been compromised but it's at the judge's discretion as to whether it is so significant that it warrants a mistrial. I think people generally are influenced by what they see and hear, and just telling them otherwise doesn't necessarily change how they've been influenced. It may even be used intentionally by some legal professionals. “Professional foul” is a reasonably common practice.
In the second, in role playing people don't put a lot of effort into trying to be someone else. They are just themselves in that role, maybe with some release of inhibition. Like if you're given a temporary assignment at work because someone is on leave. You're doing someone else's job but you're still you doing it. Movies and gamer talk is about as relevant as the games themselves.
I don't think these are really so much TOM as opposed to ordinary experiences.
I'm not really into games at all, but especially role playing. I'm flat out maintaining one personality, let alone making a few more up just for the hell of it.
