Does this happen to you? If so, is it often? It happens with me a lot that I need people to repeat what they same more than 4 times. I hear what they say but my mind seems to process what they as something else like for example
Person: Could you please pass me the salt
How it processes in my head: Hatsy canny ballo han

What are some weird languages your mind seems to convert what other people say into

I sometimes ask people to repeat themselves despite having heard it perfectly well. Then I start to answer them as they're half way through repeating. No idea why.

This happens to me too. I recently found out there is a physical reason for it: actual hearing loss caused by a condition called Meniere's disease.

I first noticed the problem back in 1998. It can be INCREDIBLY frustrating, even though I know "why." I am taking a diuretic to deal with the fluid buildup in the inner ear, but it's only been a few months, so I'm not really noticing any helpful changes yet.

The doctor did tell me that it's "not impossible" that part of the problem is brain-based auditory processing also, but he wants to treat the most salient issue first, then go from there.

@LastSanityJermaine: words get garbled--good example.
@Ausome: often, even if I'm *fairly* sure I heard right, I will still ask the person to repeat what he/she said, just to be "sure."

People think I have bad hearing because I either don't "hear" them or I ask them to repeat themselves.
I don't think there's actually anything physically wrong with my hearing. I'm just either focused on something else and block them out or what they said didn't make any sense to me. Sometimes it is that abstract, like are they even speaking English? Other times I hear the words but it's not registering what they mean, I have no context. A few minutes later and suddenly I'll figure out what they said.

My auditory processing is all sorts of wonky.

I will often speak way too loudly without realizing it.
Sometimes, I am too absorbed in whatever I'm doing to notice what you're saying.
Other times, what you say will seem garbled or I wont be able to make it out due to background noise.
And still other times, I might actually hear you just fine, but it takes me a moment for my brain to register and process what you said. I might ask you to repeat it, but while I do do, what you said will register with me.
Then other times, I might be the only one to notice a sound. :? And in addition to all that, I have tinnitus, which I've had for as long as I can remember.

I can definitely identify with all of you. I was actually diagnosed with APD when I was little, so atleast I can tell people it's an actual diagnosed problem, I'm not just not listening. I remember my mom asked if I had heated up some corn for dinner, and I heard "Honey, did you eat your porn?" It's really annoying in school, since the other kids don't really understand it they get annoyed when I have to ask the teacher to repeat. Yes, I am listening! I just tell people now when I meet them that I essentially have auditory dyslexia. And tori- I get the same way, I need to process what people say sometimes, I don't get it the first time around.

I can identify with that. Also, I sometimes hear all the sounds, but I cant make out the meaning of most of it.
My hearing is normal.

Only when my mind is exhausted.

It becomes a series of sounds. I sometimes catch a word that has meaning, but I can't string the words together to make a meaningful sentence.

Yes I hear gibberish.

I'm not as bad these days, but when I was younger I could barely understand what was being said and it made me very unconfident.

Yes this happens to me too. I`ll often hear what the person says but it takes a little longer to process and by the time they`re half way through repeating it again I`ll understand and answer them. But sometimes people will get frustrated and say "Nevermind" if I don't get it by the 2nd time.

I'm not sure why it happens as I'm not deaf. Impaired Auditory Processing I'd call it.

It occurs to me, that I read, that one of the aspergers´characteristics is a one tracked mind, - a shorter bandwidth, so to speak. Someone called it the "one-thing-at-a-time" syndrome. Most of us are poor at multitasking, - so when the mind is occupied with anything else but listening, as often happens, there isn´t space enough on the "highway".

Yes, it happens to me......it's one of the reasons I don't always like talking on the phone, and my daughter has gotten frustrated with/laughed at me before because I gave the "wrong" response to something she'd said.
