I am wondering do most people on the ASD have some itch? Because I am not sure if my skin is really sensitive but when ever I am in a conversation with someone I am always scratching the back of my head or my hair. But does anyone else have this problem?

Pruritus

Its fairly common, you see many talkers scratching their head, face, arms etc

Itch (Latin: pruritus) is an irresistible sensation that causes the desire or reflex to scratch. Itch has resisted many attempts to classify it as any one type of sensory experience. Modern science has shown that itch has many similarities to pain, and while both are unpleasant sensory experiences, their behavioral response patterns are different. Pain creates a withdrawal reflex while itch leads to a scratch reflex.[1] Unmyelinated nerve fibers for itch and pain both originate in the skin; however, information for them is conveyed centrally in two distinct systems that both use the same peripheral nerve bundle and spinothalamic tract.

1 Mechanism

1.1 Dermal/pruritoceptive
1.2 Neuropathic
1.3 Neurogenic
1.4 Psychogenic

Yes User1001---like you I often do the same thing in regards to itching.

Wow Surfman---I am definitely educated on Pruritus now :D . I enjoyed reading your post on this---I never knew it had a name, and what it was all about.

I'm also more exposed to itchiness than other people. I don't think it's a dermal problem, but I observed that if I scratch an area more, the more it itches. It must something to do with products of bacteria, since if I use paper tissue, it is more bearable. The worst part is when I try to sleep and my itching face or neck awakens me. :(

I run hot water on itchy skin (or hold something soaked in hot water over it). Apparently this releases all the histamines and relieves the itch for hours without scratching.

I started doing this because I had some moderate pruritis issues several years ago, and discovered it accidentally.

My scalp itches most of the time, but that's probably due to the nerve damage.

Sometimes I think my whole life is just the stuff that happens to me between scratching itches.

I get itchy but it's from dry skin and uncomfortable clothing.

I scratch until it stops itching and starts hurting. I find I can handle the pain better than the itching.
