Are you a social chatter or do you shudder at the thought of picking up?
Why is that?
Me, I would be happy if they destroyed the things.

Discuss.

Destroying sounds good to me  Well, I guess phones do come in handy sometimes, but for the most part I don't care for them. I usually turn my bedroom phone's ringer off because it doesn't have a setting low enough for me, and if I wind up talking to someone, all I can think of is what I could be doing if I weren't talking on the phone.
Edit: Also, if I'm making an important call (to someone other than family or friends), I usually get anxious and stumble over my words, no matter how many times I tried to rehearse things before I made the call.

I really hate phones. I only answer it if i am expecting a phonecall. This is rare. If I answer the phone and it is someone who I was not expecting I get high anxiety and get angry at the same time. I dont think I have every phoned someone else in my lifetime. If the phone rings when i am concentrating on someting it is really disruptive and invasive and I hate that. Sometimes I feel angry that people phone where I live.

Ah, sweet irony. For my personal phone, I get freaked out when it rings. From 18-19 years old, I answered the phone a total of 3 times (not an exaggeration). However, half of my job is phone support, so I have to answer the phone, and ironically (my favorite ically) I have almost no problem with the work phones. Occasionaly I get freaked out, but 99% of the time I am fine. Calling people though, I do get flustered sometimes.

I've gotten in trouble because I unplug the thing all the time and don't remember that I did. Trust me, if it is an emergency, they send the police to your house to tell you to call whoever (I know this because it happened to my husband twice when I had unplugged the phone).

And what is the concept of caller ID? If I have to look at caller ID, I have already been interrupted. Unplugging it is the ultimate solution. If it doesn't ring, I'm not disturbed.

I have yet to figure out why people feel this compulsive need to answer the phone just because it rings. It's like paying for a service that will then rule your life instead of serving you. Very strange.

Well, I answer it when it rings, it might be important, but it's also annoying when I'm in trouble for some reason. I need something which will tell me who is calling. I hate being bothered within the comfort of my own home.

Me too! I jump out of my skin and often scream  And then I shout 'F*** off' at the phone. This never works of course and I usually end up answering it anyway. But I hate phones. They've always worried me.

I hate the phone. I don't answer unless it's my husband, and I don't make calls to anyone but him, either, unless it's absolutely necessary. I'd be happy to not even have a phone, but I want to be able to call 911 in an emergency.

Phones used to sceared of taking the phone at my workplace as I could not write down details while listening. Now I don't have a problem with using it so much.

I work in a place where, for some people, talking on the phone all day to various clients is their job. I think I would struggle with this, although part of me is considering giving it a try.

On the real subject though, I have two mobile phones and don't mind talking to people on the phone as you don't have to make eye contact with them :D I wouldn't go out of my way though to call someone or have them talk to me for long periods on the phone but if it happens, it happens.

Phones to me aren't that bad I can handle a short and sweet conversation but when it comes to a long drawn out conversation I perfer to use a instant messager or email if that's going to happen.

Bought my first cell phone half way through the age of 24 and have used it only a handful of times. I hate them and tell others to contact me via MSN. If I'm not there, then I dont want people bothering me.

I once had a friend inquire as to how he'd get into contact with me when I went out riding on my motorcycle. I told him "You dont because I dont want you to or else I'd have invited you."

I dont even have a phone at my work. I'm the only person without one. I think my manager thinks its kind of funny, which it is, but I really hate the damn things. I specifically requested I not be put on them as the stress I receive from it is beyond anything else work can throw at me.

I think there is already a thread like that in this forum.

However, yes, I share all of your difficulties with phones.
