Adam Lanza had Aspergers implying that is what caused him to go postal on innocent children and teachers.

That's one of the reasons I hate the media. Another reason I hate the media is Rain Man. I was in my earliest years of high school when Rain Man came out on the silver screen and VHS. My mum used Rain Man as an example when she was telling me about my HFA when I was 15. I was scared because now I thought my peers saw me as paranoid and helpless. I tried to act as normal as I could my last weeks of 1989 while at school. My mum wouldn't let me babysit until the fall of 1990. I was a little peeved that my sister was babysitting before her 12th Birthday and I had to wait. I also knew that my mum didn't accept me the way that I was and still am. A transgendered Mod who feels very male on the inside. I went through a hippie phase in grades 11 and 12 to trick my mum into thinking I've changed. All of those things happened because of a movie with a two word title - Rain Man.

It was the summer of the Year 2000 that I've decided to accept everything about myself that was different. Once I've accepted my HFA and admitted to myself about having a Cockney accent that summer, it felt as though a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders.

I read the entire article and viewed the pictures. It didn't say anything about Asperger's. It is eerie that his father wrote in his birthday card, "send me an e-mail when you want to go shooting."

I know I think it is a good and fair article.

However at the time of the shootings Aspergers was all over the media but we are only now seeing the not so cute baby pictures of Adam with guns and ammo.

There is a report from the cesspit channel Fox News Report says school shooter Lanza had controversial sensory condition, Asperger's

I hate the media too...Anyone on the outside can see the media is very biased and tries to tell stories instead of just reporting things.

Leave it up to the siblings to skew the stories.

Is the media also playing up a need to have guns banned over there? To me it seems that way. I won't give my opinion on what I feel because I live in an entirely different culture where guns were more tightly controlled when I was 9, so I've never really been exposed to them.

I think they would focus on Adam's AS or supposed AS to show you that normal people don't commit crimes like these.

Personally, I've been so pressured to act less autistic that I would have gone over the edge. This is really a society problem with how we treat others who are different and since the explosion of social media we all care so much less about each other and don't care how we make others feel.

Oh, now I've read the article I can see this is Australian media. Now I'm sure they are playing up the need to have guns banned in America. A lot of Australians think it's an obvious things to make guns illegal over there. It seems they are trying to paint an Adam as an abnormal disturbed person.

Mental illness can make people act this way. I hate to add stigma to it but it does happen especially if the person doesn't get the right treatment or isn't in a supportive environment. It's a real tragedy what happened and it was horrible how the media made people turned against autistic people, but we those of us in the community managed to turn all that around.

Trust Fox News to not even get the definition right.

Connecticut school shooter Adam Lanza had been diagnosed with a controversial disorder that made it hard for him to deal with sights, touch and smell and Asperger's syndrome, a new report claimed Tuesday.

That doesn't even make sense. Also, the article is from February 2013, so it would still have been when the media was all pointing its fingers at Asperger's being the cause.

Quote:
Adam Lanza also would have not responded appropriately to pain.

This is hilarious. So now we have to fear people with sensory processing disorder? Please. I have severe sensory issues and it usually has me cowering in a corner. Yes, let's dehumanize people with SPD.

The media regardless of being lib or con are getting cruddier and cruddier each day. A political debate is an entirely different debate I could proceed with. I won't.
What I do want to focus on is the way the media portrays Asperger's Syndrome here. Do you think we're (or the public in general) are not doing enough to show the rest of the public what Asperger's really is? Most people when they hear about Asperger's Syndrome usually say something within the context of "uhhhh....isn't that a form of retardation?".
And that's why we need educate others on our differences from NTs. And it's not to put down those who are mentally ret*d. We just need to show that they are not related. People need to be educated on Asperger's Syndrome and Autism in general.

Not so easy when the deck is severely stacked against us and the only ones holding the real cards are people who are intolerant of difference.

Adam Lanza was diagnosed with Asperger's in 2005. It's in the police report that was recently released, and so the media is now reporting it all over. Google "Adam Lanza Asperger's 2005."
