Under normal circumstances, whatever hypersensitivities I have either don't cause me too much duress or are the sorts of things I can work around. For example, while I might notice sounds that nobody else does, I won't be driven to a meltdown over it. And I can sidestep clothing texture issues because I can wear casual attire to work. But I've found that I become much more sensitive to auditory input when I am upset. For example, I was headed for a meltdown last week and suddenly the buzzing of the fluorescent lighting ballast in the room became too much to handle. I had to turn off the light to stop the incessant buzzing lest I started smashing stuff. I've experienced this sort of thing in the past as well, now that I think of it: I often can't listen to music when I'm annoyed or angry, for example.

Does anyone else here experience this sort of thing?

Very much so. It is very common for me to put my fingers in my ears when I am upset that way. And close my eyes. If I am left alone long enough I can often regain some composure that way. At home I will bury my head under a cushion or pillow. Shut out as much sound and light as possible.

I can't really elaborate, as EzraS described my experiences accurately enough already, but just wanted to let you know I'm the same.

Yes, I'm absolutely like that too.

Not thought of that. Used to cause an immediate meltdown.

I am not really sure if sensitivity is what leads to me being upset, or does me being upset increase my sensitivity. But there is certainly a connection.

When I'm upset my ability to manage and regulate my sensory inputs goes out the window. A shutdown or meltdown can ensue as a result.
