Just in case you missed it, or don't watch it at all, the TV series Parenthood on NBC has had the courage to tackle the issue of adult ASD diagnosis.

They handle it very accurately. This episode aired on January 2nd.

http://www.nbc.com/parenthood/video/a-l ... is/n44682/

We are talking about it in the Autism Politics section but I thought I might post it in a few other places to get more people involved.

I think this is a rather big deal as so often ASD is treated as a children's issue. Those of us who get an adult diagnosis have an entirely different experience.

As far as I know, this is the first time that the mainstream media has addressed the adult ASD issue from the "Aha Moment" forward. I hope they continue the storyline. Regardless, its nice to see an adult perspective finally represented!

Thanks Parenthood!

(I am going to post exactly this in a few places, so I apologize in advance for the repetition. If any moderators read this and want to combine the threads in the correct place, it would be greatly appreciated!)

This is interesting in that just the other day my dad was talking with my aunt
and mentioned an old TV show called Boston Legal that had a character who
was an adult diagnosed with Aspergers on the law team.
Here is a reference I found: http://bostonlegal.wikia.com/wiki/Jerry_Espenson

Watching that scene in itself made me feel like I was watching a male version of me. I had been getting that recognition factor from things I'd read for at least the past eight years, but then more recently one actual book made me do exactly what that character was doing with his book, so, watching that was surreal for me.

I too found myself having multiple "holy crap" moments, making notes, using Post-It notes. In fact, I started putting so many notes into the book that I realized it would be more practical to put a note on the pages where it mentioned something I DIDN'T relate to.

I've always been curious about this show and this news has made me even more interested in checking it out. Good to see a drama on a mainstream network tackle the subject sensitively.

So glad to see that other people think its important too!

And yes, I remember that Boston Legal character. What I found interesting here is that we get to see the character have his "Aha Moment". One of many if they continue the storyline (fingers crossed).

It was incredibly accurate script writing and Ray Romano did an amazing job. I also did the post is thing, and underlining and then the stack of books just grew until I had to dedicate an entire bookshelf to it! That is the true story of adult diagnosis.

That ah-ha moment looks like so familiar to my ah-ha moment last summer. I think I may have to check that show out.

I love Parenthood. It's the only show we watch right now.

Falling: Yes I know....that "Aha Moment" was spot on....it was the post-its that really rang true for me. In the next episode they should show him in bed with his nightstand piled high with books on AS. Or was that just me?

Jetbuilder: Enjoy! Its a really great show and the AS is just integrated right in like in "real" families.
