No matter what I do I just cant seem to manage money. Im always overdrawn and always finding out that ive spent too much. Im not learning from my mistakes either so I repeat the same errors which lead to me being broke.

my mum has been urging and urging me to apply for living allowance because of the amount of money my OCD costs me and due to the fact that I am largely housebound unless compelled to leave, but I feel like it should be reserved for people with extreme disabilities - relatively speaking. Im talking people who cant work cant eat cant sleep etc. I just feel like im taking advantage - I doubt it'll help anyway because as I said I cant handle money - my OCD compels me to spend all my money on new things to replace contaminated items and if I dont the contamination spreads to other items and my anxiety rises to a fever pitch.

Ironically when im broke my ocd is alot easier becasue the inner prompting voice urging me to replace this or buy this new item is silenced. Choice makes it hell. I end up sitting around staring at the items and imagining the widening circle of contamination :(

What are your experiences vis finances

Psychological treatment can be quite effective for OCD. The gold standard is a combination of anti-depressants and cognitive-behavioral therapy.

the UKs disability living allowance is based on a person having had the disability for at least six months [but at this length of time it has to be expected to last a year or more]...and they have to have at least quite significant care and/or mobility needs for part of the day or night-or both, there are low,mid and high levels for care and low and high levels for mobility, many of us with autism are on high rate mobility whilst some autists only get care and no mobility, most autistics [ie,mild autism] qualify for low rate mobility.

the need to pay for lots of item replacement costs is due to having a higher cost of living due to the disability,so yes that woud be one of the issues to go into heavily on the forms.
try using DIAL [owned by the cerebral palsy charity;scope, but works for all disabilities] to get support with the whole process.

I felt like a jerk going to disability services at the uni. I have this notion that its for people with downs for instance. I guess I just need to bite the bullet. It'll be pretty low I imagine but it might help absorb the extra cost. It can be hell when I run out of washing up liquid and cant wash for instance

I have several OCPD traits. I actually dislike spending money. I am more inclined to hoard it.

If at all possible, leverage some of your tendencies to establish details, rules, lists, order, organization around managing your money. Create folders, spreadsheets, etc. to track everything. That's what I do. It becomes almost a game.

I'm having problems with managing my finances too. When I have money, I have an intense urge to spend it on something! I actually look for something I wanna buy. For some reason I feel uncomfortable when I actually have money. I'm gonna try teaching myself to make, and follow, a monthly budget.

My weekly shopping has been 60 O.O this is just through OCD. I had no bleeding idea. I was buying supplements and replacing "soiled items". I have to get that down to 10 for it to be sustainable :o

Nothing seems to go right! I opened a small shop on Ebay for instance. Sold my first item and 10 days later turns out my card was refused (no reason given I had enough funds) I had to issue a refund. Just another example of my life going south

Hi, binary. I am so happy you are taking SSRIs to help with the OCD. My sister had the "contamination" kind of OCD and it was horrible. So much fear! No wonder you spent all your money. I hope the SSRIs will clear that up for you.

Although I am sort of a "Tea-Party" American, I still hope you take government disability. The fact is that you really are disabled. You're not stupid or physically handicapped, but emotionally and neurologically all of us (or most of us) with AS truly are disabled. And when we do make it on our own, it's the result of very hard work. If it weren't for my mom and dad's support during my 20s and part of my 30s, I'd have been on the street. But now I have a job and am doing ok.

So I think I can speak for all of us at WP, that we want the very best for you. And if that means disability now, that's ok. You're smart and capable, so, in the future when you do have a job and independence, then the government can tax the crap out of you so that you can help someone else! Haha!

Actually, binary, think of it this way: Your future self is giving money to the government to help your present self!

Also, don't be so pessimistic. You're smart and you'll be okay. I have read many of your posts and I can tell your a capable person. You can get through this.

I'm the opposite, I have a hard time spending money so I never go out and buy stuff. I hate change in finances and anything that rises gives me anxiety and it upsets me. I also fear going broke and my husband says I live like we're poor and it does make me cheap. In a way it cripples me but it also stops me from compulsive spending and it keeps me able to pay my bills. I didn't like how the transportation company here was raising their fares so I got a honored citizen bus pass and for all the poor people in the area who can't afford it, well good thing I do have a disability.

I was taught one good trick, when you want to buy something, you go home and wait for like a few weeks or maybe 4 weeks, and if you still want something you buy it then.

It really stops all that impulse shopping.

Obviously doesnt work for food. But again its not often that its food that people blow all their money on.

And obviously never ever ever spend all your money, should never do that, its good to always have some money left, you not for bad times.

Im definitely not very bright or good at anything. But money iv never had any problems with. I have my netbank which i always check how much money i have. and rich i am definitely not.
