unable to see the real picture in my mind, it's extremely hard for me to fit the pieces together. this is a bit ironic, seeing that the puzzle symbolizes autism.
and how are you with puzzles? worse/better than average?

Depends on the puzzle.

I do tend to learn things in unorthodox ways: a bit here; a bit over there; then a bit back here. I don't build from a foundation. I sometimes install chimneys in the sky first. But in the end, the whole thing comes together.

I think that has more to do with the fact that NTs have an understanding of autism that is like a puzzle with pieces missing. Or perhaps that NTs see ASD individuals as puzzles themselves with a few pieces gone.

There are many things NTs don't know about autism - how to accurately assign it symbology is one of them.

I'm not sure if I'm above or below average on building puzzles but I do find it very soothing to do. I do remember learning from my sister when I was younger how she build puzzles because I complained over not knowing where to start amongst all the pieces, she told me "Start with the egdes" and since then I've kind of done it that. I hate doing puzzles online with a clock timing how long you've taken though.

Jigsaw puzzles (one hundred pieces) is a challenge.

I have never been good with puzzles. In addition I completely lack the patience.

Puzzle are not a problem at all. Even complicated ones.

All you need to do is realize that even if the puzzle was completely monochrome, all you just need to pick up each piece and see if it fits. On average you will find it half way through the remaining pieces.

Now if that isn't autistic, what is?

I haven't done a jigsaw puzzle in a while, but when I do them the larger (1000, 2000 pieces and up) and more ornate the better. It's the detail orientation.

I will go on obsessive sprees of doing crossword puzzles, cryptograms, and logic puzzles (not so much math puzzles -- I'm a Word-Fact Aspie). I think it was good for me earlier this year when I was recovering from a fractured vertebra and needed something to keep my mind active and to focus through the pain. Once I get going it's hard to stop. However, right now I'm more preoccupied with my reading interests and playing board and card games by myself. I actually have a stockpile of jigsaw puzzles that I bought or gifts to my parents that I reclaimed when my father died and purchased a roll-up puzzle mat to make it easier to do them with the cats around. However, I haven't started them yet -- waiting for a time when my attention is less divided. Once I start I probably won't be able to stop for a while as with the word puzzles.

My mom would always keep the box close to her and position it so she could look at the picture for reference as she worked -- would/does that help you?

I don't need to see the picture at all (not in my mind, not on the box). When I used to do puzzles with my mum I would drive her a little crazy because I didn't care if the pieces were upside down or right side up (I scanned for shapes before colors, and have never been good at minding how I put the pieces back after picking them up).

I love puzzles, but I don't know if I'm better or worse than average.

I am very good with visual spacial puzzles. I find verbal mostly impossible.

Wood and metal 3D puzzles, mazes, puzzle apps on the ipod are all fun and relaxing for me.

I've never been good with any sort of puzzles before. Guess it must've been that I just never get around to completing them. :?

Whenever I do finish a puzzle, though, I'm always like, "Bwahaha, I have finally completed thee, puzzle!''
