Ever since Asperger's Syndrome was discovered, I've had this one question: Is there such thing as a geek? I say this because A geek is obviously an Aspie, they aren't a nerd unless they are a neurotypical (in my opinion.) Are we (aspies) automatically categorized in the geek category or loser? I would have to say loser because people do judge, and they judge unfairly by way of everyone else. (in my opinion) No-one thinks about geeks anymore, I don't know about you guys but I'd like to be called a geek sometimes. It is a compliment. I think the part of my Asperger's accounts for me to be a geek. However, I've become more gregarious in a space of 4 years. My personality changes, the more I am in a social environment (school) the more I think of myself as a geek. I feel that I am myself when I am in the comfort of my own home.

I completely disagree that all Aspies are geeks, and that all geeks are Aspies. Thats a gross generalization. Admittedly, many of us are geeky and enjoy things that are of a geeky nature, but that generality is completely untrue. I will admit to being a huge geek, but Ive known geeks who are not Aspies, and known Aspies who aren't geeks.

PS- Not trying to start a fight/flame, just saying I disagree with the general statement that A=B.

But being a geek isn't negative, nor is being an Aspie.

I've known geeks who were not aspies, and aspies who were not geeks.

And then there was the Serial Slut .... (but that's another story altogether.)

The ones who aren't an aspie aren't necessarily a geek.

I am not saying either is negative, its just not fair to say that if you are A, then you are B, or vice versa.

It's fair, I at least would like to consider myself a geek.

Agreed. While I do like being called a geek/nerd/aspie, it is unfair to place generalizations on entire portions of the populations. It is impossible, and illogical, to say that all aspies are geeks, and all geeks are aspies.

I used to be offended at being called a geek, but not anymore. In fact, when the cable TV game show "Beat the Geeks" started airing in Canada, I came to realize that everyone's a geek. It just means that there's something in your life that you're passionate about. Trekkies, jocks, and everyone in between, we're all geeks. (BTW, I would have challenged the TV geek.)

What do you mean by"loser"? Who decided? What's wrong with being a geek? Is it a crime to be scientificly proficient? Do you detest being rational, or competent?

That is true, and Aspies are passionate!

Again, this wasn't meant to be negative: I meant that people could call you a loser if they wanted to and it would make sense to their friends, not that everyone (in a whole) can call you that, but that mean people could, I guess.
