Someone had mentioned Social Anxiety Disorder in another post and I have a question about it.

When someone has Social Anxiety Disorder, are the symptoms exhibited across all social interactions (i.e., with family, with close friends in a large group setting, with close friends in a small group setting, with not so close friends, with acquaintances, with strangers, at work with colleagues, at work with superiors, in large group settings, in small group settings, at school in the classroom, etc. etc.)?

Or, can it be selective (e.g. someone exhibits the symptoms only in large group settings, but not in any of the other settings)?

Simply curious.

Based on the people I know, social anxiety is not across all social interactions, with the least anxiety around family and friends.

Meeting new people is a great challenge, but for people I've known my whole life it's non-existant, short of eye contact.

I have social anxiety and my social anxiety arises when I'm around people that aren't my family. But now that I'm thinking about it, even around my family I sometimes get anxiety but I think that stems from getting bad reactions from them when I say the wrong things and stuff.

Depends entirely on the person if it's selective. Some people can do well with family but freeze up around new people like classmates.
