I recently saw a thread asking how aspie-friendly the city of Los Angeles is, so that got me thinking of starting a similar thread, but instead of focusing on LA and other American cities, I want to focus on Canadian cities. Anyhow, for the Canadians here, and really anyone else who's lived in or visited Canada for a substantial period of time, how would you rank the following cities?
- Edmonton (I've never lived here, but I've visited a bunch of times like most people in northern Alberta, and it seems like a pretty nice place. Has somewhat of a bad reputation, but I don't think it's nearly as rough as many people make it out to be).
- Calgary (I was here once when I was really young, but I don't remember it all too well)
- Vancouver (I remember it being fairly nice, though again it has somewhat of a rough reputation)
- Saskatoon (never been here)
- Winnipeg (never been here)
- Toronto (aside from the airport, never been here)
- Ottawa (never been here)
- Quebec City (never been here)
- Montreal (never been here)
There's also a bunch of others I've probably forgotten, mainly in the maritime provinces, though I think I've gotten the main ones.
Anyhow though, as far as aspie-friendliness goes, I'm mainly thinking of things like decent public transportation, good social programs/resources for people on the spectrum, a good variety of specialist shops catering to different interests (like record stores, game and hobby shops, comic book stores, etc.), good mental healthcare programs, etc. I
understand that in a large city, it's hard to avoid things like traffic, noise, and crowds, but at the same time I can imagine that a larger city would do a better job of catering to people with special needs overall than a smaller community.
