Hi guys,
I'm always wondering if things I feel are due to having Asperger's or just part of being human. For as long as I can remember, when I wake up in the morning, I can see fine, my head feels "even" inside, and I don't hear the electricity hissing through the house or office. I can think clearly and make eye contact. As the day progresses, it's like parts start to shut down. My vision becomes fractured and my mind hurts and feels unstable inside. I hear all the bad noises and have difficulty making out conversations. I can barely make eye contact. Right now I can hardly focus on a single letter I am typing. Is this my AS or does this only mean I'm tired?

That happens to me too! I thought it was because of my job, but you love your job. Age maybe or a combination of both things - being around people feels like mentally running obstacle courses sometimes.

Happy Birthday (tomorrow) - hope you have a really nice day!

I'm no expert, but from things people have said and a couple YouTube videos I've seen, it sounds like progressive sensory overload. You're being overwhelmed. I mean, people get tired as the day goes on, but you're going beyond that.

You seem to have both Aspie and neurotypical traits

What would these results mean? Been told here I must be a "half pint".

I'm sorry to learn of what you are going through. It sounds like a frustrating thing to deal with.

I experience being lessened abilities these days also, though in slightly different ways. I couple of things I am wondering about though: I wonder how long ago you started noticing this, and also if there a time of day that the decline seems to start or accelerate.

This is what I'd assume as well.

I'm not entirely sure what you precisely mean by fractured vision, though that definitely sounds sensory related. Hearing all the bad noises and difficulty making out conversations are typically sensory related. I've read that eye contact is more intense if you're having trouble concentrating as you need to concentrate on what they're saying alone, and concentration issues apparently come about with sensory overload.

That being said, there may be many contributing reasons as to why you're overloading throughout the day. It could just be the gradual experience, though perhaps it may actually be something like your diet causing you to lose energy and thus the resources to cope with having Asperger's. Maybe you aren't having enough sleep, or perhaps you need a mid-day nap. I haven't been in your position, so I honestly can't tell.

Thanks for the feedback, guys, I really appreciate it. So I guess I get to chalk up another quirk to Prof. Asperger.

Marky, you asked how long ago did it start? I mean, my earliest memories of evenfall were always marked by this sense of falling apart inside. When it got very bad was when I was in high school and I was involved in all sorts of extracurricular activities and AP classes and so on. Even though I graduated at the top of my class, I was absent almost 40 days my senior year due to "sickness" (overload).

In fact I need to go to bed soon. Oh, and this is a new one: around this time of night the tricep area of my arms gets crazy itchy. And if I stay up any later then my back gets itchy, then my stomach, then my calves, and so on. I have big tactile sensory overload issues....

It can go either way with me. I notice a lot of days I wake up in the morning feeling okay, and by early afternoon I feel like I am already shutting down, getting discombobulated and irritable and unable to focus on anything. Then when I get home I rest hoping I will feel better but usually I don't, unless I sleep. But other days I wake up already feeling like I can't function, and just struggle through the whole day. The amount of sleep I get doesn't seem to matter. Also it can happen on any day, that I might get a surge of energy and clear headedness starting right about the time I should be going to bed that makes me want to stay up late. I just can't regulate my sleep patterns to a 24 hour cycle.

I feel like I spend a lot of time lately just waiting to feel better, to feel like I can DO something, but the relief never comes unless I sleep, however if I go to sleep every time I feel like I'm disintegrating I might as well just spend the rest of my life napping.

Thanks for the additional background. Just drawing upon my personal experiences I would agree it sounds like overload building throughout the day. Another thing I have noted is that as I age my coping resources decline, and I am more prone to overloads.

My casual working hypothesis is that my normal age-related cognitive decline tends to also sap coping resources. I am looking into polyphasic sleeping in hopes that a brief, shallow afternoon nap might help might help increase and extend my daytime productivity.

You freak me out lately JSBACHlover! Everytime I see something later that I think "wow, that's exactly how I feel" it is one of your posts.

I don't have time to respond to this post right now, but I'll come back later because it is a big issue for me too.

Oh my.

I've never heard of such a thing.

Dianthus...

You're me, aren't you?

Oh, wait...

You're a female.

Oh well... The rest matches.

Hey, get diagnosed, will ya'? Then I'll know I'm on the spectrum too.

Happy Birthday JS! :D

I feel duller and foggier and less able to focus as the day progresses too. (Sounds like a lot of us here are morning people!)

Thank you for wishing me a happy birthday! I wonder how news gets around about things like that? Anyway, it's very nice of you. I had a very busy day visiting sick people and all the other stuff I do, and then I had dinner with an old priest friend (literally - he's going to be 70). It was good to catch up.

I want to spend some time on the WP forums just seeing who is around, but I'm already having my degeneration symptoms, with both arms and my back itching. It's uncanny, the same progression of overload every evening....
