Hello,

I have this problem which I (and some docs) used to describe as derealisation syndrome. Now I think differently.
I believe it's brain fog. my memory is absolutely wack. all sort of memory, short term, long term, all of it. I can't concentrate, and most of all, I can't concentrate on "now" and my surrounding. makes me feel derealized for sure but I don't believe it's derealization. It's just diminished consciousness! I'm basically just 10% awake or conscious! I used to be very smart as a kid so I can act sane (most of the time) with that 10% so no one is going to notice but this is hell. I have this since my early teens. or maybe I have had it always but I can't remember. I once took a very large dose of the tranquilizer Melperone and didn't have it for 20 minutes but that's all. I took many medication including all antipsychotics. It's not psychosis. It's like a mild version of delirium.

is this AS related? what can I do about it? meds? mental training? supplements?
thanks for reading,
omid

Possibly Aspie (diagnosed by an autism expert, doc moves abroad, forced to change docs and all say it's schizophrenia NOS or schizo-affective disorde or personality disorders. initial doc was a colleague of uncle Simon btw. you do the math.). (edit: by Uncle Simon I mean Simon Baron Cohen. Just to clear things up.)

There are so many possible causes of this - some are on the physical level (eg sleep apnoea, side effect of medication, allergic reactions, general inflammation in the body, malnutrition, mineral depletion - and many others eg some chronic or temporary medical conditions). Some are on the psychological level - reaction to past and/or present trauma, very high stress levels (which also cause physical inflammation in the body and brain).

So the question is really, "where to start"? Have you had any basic medical check ups in the past year - things like blood count, thyroid, blood sugar etc? Were they all within normal limits? Do you wake up tireder than when you went to sleep? (That tends to point to a medical problem). How is your nutrition? You may be deficient in a particular element like zinc (the oral test for that is easy, can be done at home with zinc drops to see if you can taste them or not). The branch of medicine that looks at environmental and nutritional influences on function is called 'orthomolecular' medicine and that's another option to check out to see if anything gels with your experience or not.

What does your intuition suggest to you? Have you any thoughts about where you might start your search for resolution of this? Your intuition so far is that this is not derealisation, and from what you have said, your intuition could be right on the money. Isolate the cause and the solution follows...

When I've had similar issues in the past, it was because of food sensitives. Check your diet/maybe do an elimination diet and get a regular checkup with your Dr. to discuss other possibilities.
