move their hands when they talk? Seriously, I just started paying attention to it and I find the whole thing weird. I don't really understand why people do it either. I guess it is suppose to make what you are saying more interesting but I feel that if everyone in the world was on the asperger's spectrum no one would ever move their hands when they're talking. I tried doing it when I was talking today and I felt it made me appear way more socially awkward than I usually am. Maybe it is something that you have to get use to.

most people do this? that is odd as people have said it is unusual when I do....but yeah I am not usually consciously aware of it so I don't do it willingly for any specific reason it just happens and someone might mention it.

I noticed that usually people do it when they are trying to explain something (such as professors giving a lecture at university, or students asking a question). If it is done incorrect (again I don't really understand how this is possible) it appears to result in social awkwardness.

I usually need 3+ cups of good coffee before I put this much energy into conversations. Last time I remember it was on my cellphone during a job interview.

How can I hope to ever learn to maintain eye contact if they are distracting me by moving their hands? :P
Actually have been oblivious to it.
Decided to watch a YouTube video of a Jay Leno monolog (first person that popped into head)
and did notice for first time that he moves his hands and arms around a lot.
Then saw the same with people being interviewed by him.
Will guess that if people have a problem with asd people
doing the same it is because they are "not doing it right".

No I don't find it weird. I see it all the time because it distracts me when they speak to me.

I saw this commercial (I think it was for Olive Garden or frozen pizza or something) when I was a kid where this one guy was talking about how Italians talk with their hands, and when I saw it, I started doing it because I thought it looked cool. Years later, I still catch myself doing it just kind of unconsciously. :P

actually I move my hands and speak with them, even though people don't get it, I pretty much can't speak if they are tied up

It depends on where you live and social status.

Fairly common behavior.

I find it difficult to speak without moving my hands.

Me too and apparently I move my hands in weird ways when I talk. I try to keep them still.

I use my hands when speaking. Because I am also ADHHHHHHHHHHHHD I speak and move quickly. when I lived in New Jersey, where the majority of people speak quickly and use their hands while doing so, I was still considered different, but not so much neurologically different, as 'not from around here" different.

I was at a seminar once where the instructor tried to teach a roomful of people how to use their hands when they talk.

The idea was to "emphasize" certain ideas. For example, if you were talking about something really big or tall you'd use your hands in a sweeping motion to catch the listener's eye......something like describing a large fish you'd caught........... "this" long <----------------------------------> :D

I also move my hands when I speak. It helps me to get my words out more easily.

I've noticed that some people with ASD move their hands a lot when they talk, while others do it much less than expected/not at all. People are just different :)
