Do you get insomnia?

Ever have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep?

Can you NOT go to sleep at "normal" hours?

Anyone know of helpful prescriptive remedies?

I have always had insomnia.

I can't go to sleep at a reasonable time (before midnight) even when i have to be awake early in the morning.

does prescription medication help? like, ambien?

I am not on medication, but considering going on them just to sleep at night.

any ideas?

I'm waiting for my ambien to kick in rihgt now as a matter of fact. It's not very reliable, unfortunately, but works sometimes, which I'm hoping for tonight. What works the best? I slept relatively well when I was living on my own. I had control over my environment. Warm milk, a book, relaxing music, all this helps me.

It's 2am here and I'm still awake and on my computer... I know I won't fall asleep till about 4am no matter what I do. I have no problem falling asleep in the afternoons though. :?

My best solution to the insomnia was when I took an overnight job in a call centre. I worked from 12am-8am and it was the best job I ever had. (There's never any management around at that hour either.) I could go to class in the morning and then sleep in the afternoon and wake up at about 10pm. It was SO perfect for me.

Anyway- sleeping tablets don't work for me. I still have trouble with the actual falling asleep when I take them and they leave me groggy for the entire day after.

Once I do fall asleep, I am able to stay asleep.
The actual problem is that I have is that get distracted from falling asleep by finding all the things I needed to do and didn't get to. I sometimes make lists in my head and then I get up and write the lists down on paper. Then I get annoyed that I have a list of unfinished things and then I eventually get up and actually start doing the things I needed to do.

It doesn't matter how tired I am physically- my brain still races around. I will find books to read or all of a sudden something on television seems interesting. If it is quiet and all electronics are off I start to notice all the sounds of the night or the lights of cars that pass outside my window. Hubby doesn't notice any of this stuff... It must be so nice to just put your head on the pillow and fall asleep.

The other thing that bothers me... when I am falling asleep sometimes I notice that I physically jump- it happens when I just pass from a state of conscious to unconscious. I don't know if it happens to anyone else, but my body jerks suddenly waking me out of that sleeping state. Then I have to go through the whole process of trying to relax again and it all starts over with the lists.

Sleeping tablets are just Benedryl with a different name. If I'm really desperate I take some NyQuil and some Benedryl togethor. It starts to feel like the air has become really viscous and I can fall asleap real easy.

I sometimes have insomnia, but I find that Benadryl works, but only when I take it early enough so I'm not groggy the next day.

I have insomnia, but it is entirely self caused. I pulled an all nighter doing an essay. Then I slept during the day the next day to make up for the lost sleep. Now I don't feel sleepy and it's really late.

What an appropriate time to be posting this...

Yes, there are times when I have trouble falling asleep for more than 24 hours.

No, if I'm asleep I stay that way.

Sort of, if I get screwed up in my sleep patterns it's VERY difficult to get them back on "normal", but otherwise I can sleep normal hours

My sleep cycle is erratic. It's 4 a.m. here and my body feels like it's something like 8 p.m.

Melatonin works for me, but it doesn't work for everyone. You might give it a try, though. Ask your pdoc if it interacts with any meds you're taking.

thnx every1

i was thinking about ambien cr (for staying asleep)
or some kind of tranquilizer (to counter-act/balance anxiety)

i've read that some benzodiazapenes work well for insomnia.

like xanax or valium :o :?

When I am stressed about something - usually when my normal routine is threatened then I have trouble getting to sleep and wake up really early (maybe sleep 1am-4am) but when I am stressed like this I don't get tired during the day either, this usually lasts a couple of weeks then I slowly get back to normal.

I have found that exercise helps me get to sleep fairly easily, if I don't exercise I find it hard to switch off to get to sleep but when unstressed can stay asleep. I've also found that exercising hard can help to unwind physical tension and even get rid of my tension headaches and stomach cramps.

Once in a long while I will have a short bout (2 or 3 days) of insomnia. When it's a problem, I found melatonin to work better than anything else.

I've not had a good night's sleep in ages. I've tried going to bed earlier, but I just can't seem to switch off. :(
