Do you seem to be an insomniac or DSPS? How often do you have trouble sleeping? What do you do when your tired but can't fall asleep? When's the longest you've been without sleep?

on the bus ride from Columbia SC to Tacoma WA, I was without sleep for about 4 days give or take. I cannot sleep upright, and the seats on the bus would not recline. I was like a zombie for almost a week afterwards. I slept about 20 hours a day for the next 4 days and was weak for another week.

What do I do when I can't sleep? Post to WP of course :) (People are now saying "that poor child must never sleep") I can get to sleep okay when I'm tired, but the (sort of) problem is that a lot of the time I don't feel tired. The longest I can remember being awake is 50 hours.

When I can't sleep, I knit or make embroidery and listen to the radio (there is an interesting program called "Night Watch" where the host has a theme for the night and people can call him / her and discuss it. I enjoy listening to that).
When I feel tired enough to sleep, I get a cup of warm milk. That, and also the needlework, helps me relax.

That's the best cure I know. :)

longest with not even a few minutes of sleep is five days straight.

but I have a serious sleep disorder, I may only get 2-3 hours sleep in each week and this has been going on for years

I like to read, sometimes just get on the computer or watch TV.

Sleep tapes help me sleep, especially if they're on loop, so every time I surface, I remember to go back to sleep.

Here's something unusual that I'm using lately: the sound of a cat purring. I downloaded it to my iPod. There's some kind of medical reports about the sound waves of cat purring being the same as human healing. Whatever. But it does put me to sleep. It relaxes me immediately. Lately I imagine the sound and it relaxes me, which helps in shopping malls.

Re sleeping with iPod - I bought a speaker-headband which not only does away with ear pods but also blocks light (if I pull it down). Great invention.

I used to play soft instrumental music on my iPod as I fell asleep, until leaving my iPod on all night drained the battery potential on a couple of them
Now I tend to write on my iPod with the brightness down and color inversion on.
WhenI'm in bed, even when I'm physically tired, my mind seems just as awake and ready to be agonizingly bored if I just lay there/think stressful thoughts... so I'm always doing something right up until I can't keep my eyes open.
Does the sound of a clock ticking help anyone? I feel like I used to like that a lot, and it might help... will probably try that again soon...

I went through a bad patch when I had panic attacks every night so I think for about a month I only got about 5 hours sleep interrupted with panic attacks each night, it was terrible though I managed to get better after being put on beta blockers.

I can't imagine 5 days though, as someone else said, without sleep, I know I feel horrible just one night without sleep

I find the most insanely boring infomercial I can on television, turn it down super low so that I have to strain to hear it, and force myself to listen to it. I usually fall asleep within 10 minutes.

I have had a life time of sleeping problems. My autistic son also has sleeping problems.

The best solution for me is to rotate medications because everything eventually looses its power to make me sleepy. I take prescription sleeping medicines, over the counter stuff, cough syrup, allergy medications, and anxiety medication.

A large meal and a warm bedroom is also helpful.

If I can't sleep, I generally just smoke more marijuana until I'm drowsy enough to fall asleep.
Eating can also help, if I haven't had a meal in a while.
If that doesn't work and I really need to sleep I'll take a benedryl, which will usually let me get to sleep eventually if nothing else works, but I don't like to do that unless I really have to.
Until I started toking on a regular basis, though, I had a huge amount of trouble sleeping on a regular basis.
I still do if I run out for more than a day or two.
Regular marijuana use is the only thing I've found that lets me sleep regularly without losing effectiveness, becoming physically addictive, or making me feel all wonky the next day.

The longest I was ever awake without sleep was about 90 hours.
I was 15, at my first gaming convention, and didn't have a hotel room to sleep in.
I started hallucinating pretty heavily after about 80 hours, but the coffee given to me by my friend, who at the time looked like a giant cartoon dragon to me, cleared that right up.

It takes me over an hour to get to sleep, sometimes up to three hours. Sometimes I don't sleep at-all for a night. I'm not sure about the longest time I've ever stayed up, probably about 46 hours. By the second night of lying in bed from 1 AM until 7AM and not falling asleep, I'll finally fall asleep for a couple hours if not stay asleep for a long time after that. I don't think I've ever gone two full nights with no sleep. I've had sleeping problems my whole life though, even as a baby and toddler, according to my mum.

* forgot to answer the last question- When I can't sleep I read or go on the Internet.
