Stims that you've been trained out of?

Today I accidentally made a bird sound imitating a seagull outside, and realised -when someone pointed it out, bemused- that I haven't vocally stimmed (is it stimming? or just imitation?) in a long time, something that I've both surpressed myself to avoid people thinking I'm weird at University, but also ones that my family stopped me doing- because I was never diagnosed, I guess they just assumed I was making annoying sounds so they got irritated at me for it. I also realised I kind of miss making sounds :(

Some of mine that I don't do anymore: bird sounds, clicking sounds, bubble sounds by smacking my lips, hollow whistles by breathing in and out, rocking, and people tried to train me out of my constant leg wiggling but its so ingrained in me/I do it so much it didn't really work.

So, what stims (both physical and vocal) have you stopped doing whether out of your own violation or because you were 'trained' to stop?

One stem I trained myself out of was toe walking , and the reason was that toe walking was destroying my shoes. BTW: I did this back in the early 90s, before I knew I has AS.

I used to toe walk when I was little but I don't anymore. I was actually taught to correct that. I wonder if my toe walking was actually a stim.

It's mimicry, and I think it is a minor autistic trait, but technically a stim is more of a repetitive motion, to release anxiety. :bounce:

oh okay, so copying animal sounds would be simply mimicry- whereas, say, repeated humming when anxious/scared would be more of a vocal stim? Or maybe no vocal stuff is stimming? I'm sure I heard somewhere it was? Hmmm :duh:

Hand flapping....that one was tough. It turned into joint cracking, which I must say I'm pretty good at now. I know it has to annoy everyone I'm in class with.

Also I'm a pacer and I carry on this activity today when I get really nervous or when I hyper focus on an idea or concept. It calms me and lets me think.

I didn't know what hand flapping was but when I looked it up on YouTube, I remembered doing it. So I tried it again and it felt so good. I don't remember anyone telling me not to do it, so I wonder if it was a habit or something I did a few times because every kid probably does it once or twice. I also remember spinning felt really good, but I physically am unable to try that again without getting hurt! I'm almost 40 and have learned how to blend in really well. I'm afraid that between that, medications that help, and sparsity of childhood memory, I may not get diagnosed.
