I keep seeing people refer to their children as DS. What does this mean?

I looked on google; apparently it means Dear Son. There's also a DH (dear husband), so I suppose DD would be Dear Daughter. I've never heard of that until now. I know using acronyms in texting is popular, lol, but are we starting to talk like that too now? Idk, rofl, omg, afk.

Btw, nice to see a fellow Brony on here.

some people also use DS to refer to down syndrome, obviously depends on how theyve used it.

It's not down syndrome as usually it's a child with aspergers. Anyway, I think Aharon is correct.

Yeah, I've understood this to mean 'Dear ____' as well. :P

My question: ...Why not just use 'husband'/etc.? Do you have one that isn't dear or something??

It stands for "Dear Son". I believe these acronyms originated on Mumsnet.

I can't stand when people use them. In my opinion, they are disrespectful and dehumanising terms, as though children are thought of as numbers rather than people.

It's an Internet thing--parents don't want to call their kids by their real names online. It's not dehumanizing; it's like using a shortened version of "my daughter", "my son", "my wife/husband". People on the Internet are a bit silly about typing out entire phrases. But then, we use "NT" so we don't have to type out neurotypical, so I can't say that we don't do it here too.
