Special needs carer?

Hi there! What is a special needs carer? Is it like a personal assistant? What does a special needs carer do?

I have a special needs carer at school. He helps me with getting my locker open and taking the right stuff out and putting the right stuff in, and especially remembering to close and lock it. Getting to the right classes on time. Helps me out in the cafeteria with getting food and kind of running interference for me since it's crowded in there. So that's what mine does. Assists me and protects me. Without him things would always be a huge mess at school.
