When I was a kid I made up the word "chimping". It basically described the way everyone treated me. Like a chimp in a cheesy family movie. I don't know the title, but I think some people might know what I'm talking about.
It's like people saw me as a cute pet who can do a few tricks rather than actual human being. It felt horrible, but I couldn't really talk about it because most people can't notice it just by watching me interact with my peers for ten minutes.
I know that there's words that vaguely describe this. They just don't mean the exact same thing so people accuse me of imagining things. One word I've used is condescending. While it kind of means the same thing, chimping is more subtle and can often look like kindness to outside observers. Another term I've used describe is mother hen. That word also kind of describes it, but mother hen has more positive connotations than chimping does. Another word I sometimes use is infantilizing. I think it's the closest match.
