When I was a kid I made up the word "chimping". It basically described the way everyone treated me. Like a chimp in a cheesy family movie. I don't know the title, but I think some people might know what I'm talking about.

It's like people saw me as a cute pet who can do a few tricks rather than actual human being. It felt horrible, but I couldn't really talk about it because most people can't notice it just by watching me interact with my peers for ten minutes.

I know that there's words that vaguely describe this. They just don't mean the exact same thing so people accuse me of imagining things. One word I've used is condescending. While it kind of means the same thing, chimping is more subtle and can often look like kindness to outside observers. Another term I've used describe is mother hen. That word also kind of describes it, but mother hen has more positive connotations than chimping does. Another word I sometimes use is infantilizing. I think it's the closest match.

I invent tons of new words and expressions. I have a different set of vocabulary  many times it can be funny for other people. They are good words because I cleverly use the suffixes and prefixes and words from other languages, and the expressions are also clever because I play with the expressions that exist. Unfortunately it is all in Portuguese...
oh wait, do you want to talk about making up words or about being chimped?

I've experienced that in a couple of ways. I do remember when I was a child everyone around me was constantly upset with me because I was had a hard time concentrating in school and it seemed like I just don't care. It would take me all night to do homework. My parents would say things like 'see the kids playing outside? and you're still in here jackin around with your homework.' I didn't have any concept of appropriate conversation. I'd get in trouble a lot for saying the wrong thing at the dinner table and would just find out I shouldn't have said whatever I said. But by the sixth grade I think people started to notice something was off about me and either ignored me or starting 'chimping'. That was pretty annoying too. I felt like they were insulting my intelligence. But aside that I still had so much trouble focusing on school work and dealing with interpretations of that. I think it's a bit similar in both ways in terms of misreading or people assuming and forming conclusions about someone. You could call it 'taming' or chimping'. To me, it's all 'douchbaggery.' Ever feel like you were simply meant to integrate in some other society?

Was that movie "Bonzo" staring Ronald Reagan?

Maybe it was "Dunsten" (but that was an orangutan).

Anyway...I can imagine what you're talking about. Folks treating you like a pet.

The word "patronizing" is kinda that (praising you for accomplishing something a first grader can do when you're in the third grade). But thats not quite exactly what you're talking about either.

Maybe you could call it "bonzoing".

Making up words is fun!! !

Linatet: Could you translate some of your Portuguese neologisms into English, then post them? I like literal translations; they could be funny sometimes.

Also say: Don't make me out to be a Chump with your Chimping!

Sounds like something a monkey would do. Like sitting on a branch and saying some kind of odd noise.

be an alligator. 8)

What about 'Don't be chimper?'

As if when they greet you and are too nice. Chipper and chimping merged.

Chimping: When one chimpanzee employs other chimpanzees to perform sexual favors in exchange for bananas and keeps an unspecified portion of the bananas as a management fee.
