Cars are driving by and the kids are bouncing basketballs outside. They are all the way down the street but I hear it like it's right in my ears. AAAAAUUUUUGGGHHHH. There is NOTHING I can do to drown it out. I might have to leave my house and find somewhere to go and stay out for a couple of hours just to get away from the noise. I thought my house was supposed to be my refuge but I guess it's not.

Why don't they invent something to cover your ears properly.???...earplugs are rubbish, they keep popping out....sigh!

Just wear industrial standard ear defenders... like they wear on a construction site. They work fine for me if I'm at home and want a quick doze on the sofa while the Mrs is buzzing around clattering and banging.

Edit: I'll just add that they are more comfortable than ear plugs to wear for a more prolonged period.

I use industrial ear protection equipment too. Peace from leaf blowers, chain saws, waterblasters, lawnmowers the noise from which can splinter my nerves, concentration, and will to live.

I will have to get those. Thank you for the suggestion. I have foam ones and they make pounding sounds worse for me. I have even tried $150.00 musicians earplugs which did not really help me much either. But I will try to find industrial ones. If you guys can tell me the brand of the ones you have I would like that. Thank you.

Yes those foam ones are USELESS!! !! My ear protection is Norton brand. Not sure if you will have that brand in the states though. Bound to be something on the net though.

I'm sorry you're going through this.

I guess you have to live where you live--but maybe you could convince your husband to move closer to the country, eventually? It's the urban environment which is irritating you.

I hope the "industrial strength" earphones work for you.

Oy girl, you could never live in my apartment. Sometimes when the street is too noisy I put on a loud fan or music of my choice to block it out. Weirdly, I love sound of bouncing basketballs! Hope you are feeling better by now.

a large box fan in the corner generates the right volume/spectrum of brown noise to drown out most of the hubbub outside.

Thank you guys, those are great ideas.

Yes, Kraftie, as soon as we win the lottery I am buying a huge mountain with a beach at bottom and putting a fence around it. It will be invitation only. It will have private ski slopes, bike, horse and hiking trails, lakes and beachfront. Seriously though, if we are ever financially able we would both love to get out of the city and get a place with land and lots of natural beauty and quiet. For now, we are in the best area that we can afford. It's very nice actually, just on the city limit so we still have some city activity. It's actually a little bit like the suburbs of where you live Kraftie. Of course I won't mention where that is in a public post but it's pretty nice for a city street. I am just particularly sensitive to noise so even normal not so extreme city noises get to me. And by the way, Alaska would be spectacular and it has some of the best skiing conditions on the planet but my husband would freeze. He would not be able to handle it that cold! :D

I think for now I should try the earmuffs. At least I should be able to afford them!
