Like I have Said my diagnosis says ASD but it would have been Asperger's a number of years ago.

When I started on this forum I used the term Aspergers and not Autism this was not meant to exclude other people on the spectrum.

The point was a lot of people got the Aspergers Syndrome diagnosis as adults and at the start there is a kind of shock and disbelief.

At the start I wanted to talk to people going through the same process.

April 2012 is when the light bulb went on in my head and just under a year later March 2013 is when I got my official diagnosis.

I have since become convinced that Aspergers is just Autism that slipped through the cracks.

In my case I was born with a hair lip and the bullying I suffered over this and the emotional damaged I had I was convinced this was the root of my problems.

I got the lip really fixed 3 years ago and I still knew something was not right.

The process of realising we are not normal and never have been it the biggest difference between many Aspies and other people on the spectrum.

I often wonder how my life would have been had I worked it out years ago and how my life would be now if I had never found out.

So if somebody who knew nothing about Autism was to ask what is the biggest difference between classic autism and aspergers I would have to answer the number of adults getting a diagnosis.

"the process or realizing that we are not normal and never have been..."
That is really profound and actually stirred up a lot of emotion in me when I read this. Thank you. It was good for me to read this. It means a lot to me. It's a very deep concept and a very important one.

I'm self-diagnosed, and I'm comfortable this way. What understanding the Spectrum gives to me is that:

Sensory issues are real issues and should be respected. And should be dealt with intelligently snd skillfully, hopefully in time.

I have patchy social skills, actually better then average in some areas, and less good in others.

And it gives me the possibility of a tribe. although this has yet to be realized

My diagnosis is Autism Spectrum Disorder. Although I was also referred to as having Asperger's Sydrome. But that is defunk now so no point in using it.
