Wolf-biter is a term given to people who chew the skin around their finger nails and some eat the skin they bite (Dermatophagia) and/or pick (dermatillomania) off. Are you a wolf-biter?

I've been a wolf-biter since before I can remember.

Also, do you think it's a form of stimming?

I have dermatillomania. I used to only pick/bite when I was bored, but now I also do it when I'm anxious. I've wondered if it is a stim, though. It's certainly just as pleasurable and addictive as stimming.

I've picked at my face & scalp since I was little.
I remember my mother trying to get me to stop.
I'd do it subconsciously - not at all realizing what I was doing.
I still do.... I do wonder if that's a stim :?:

Yep. I also use to chew on lots of other stuff I shouldn't. You should have seen my pencils and pen caps when I was a kid. And my head phone wires, the safety rail of my bunk bed... Really the skin on my nails is one of the less weird things. Now its mostly my Popsicle and lollipop sticks...

weird name for it,no have never done it,will pull nails off with teeth if they rip down the sides but thats not a stim or habit, just get pissed off by them.

am sort of similar, have got pica and am also a 'biter' and bite self throughout the day out of stimming, needing sensory feedback, when experiencing severe challenging behavior [which has various causes from lack of communication to extreme autistic related anxiety to being spoken to nastily], sometimes will get bloody but not often as teeth are blunt from severe fluorosis [fluoride damage].

I have been a lifelong skin-picker. It started with the skin around my left thumbnail and continues with that to this day, then I also developed a habit of picking at my scalp.

There have been phases in my life when I seemed to stop entirely, and the skin even healed and looked normal. But, for more of my life than not, it's usually in a state of ragged picked-ness. I've always felt self-conscious about it and often hide that thumb.

I seem pick at it the most when I'm in a time of stress and agitation, so I guess it's a stim, although for most of my life I never knew what that was. But I also do it when feeling calmer, almost like a mini hobby.

Jeez, this place is the only place I've been able to talk about that! :o

Nail-biter and wolf-biter here, too. I had never heard that term before, though!

I tried quitting many times growing up and my husband will still get on my case if I do it in public. I have given up trying to quit and given up caring. I just try to be a bit more discreet than I used to.

I play the piano, so I've also learned to be more judicious about which finger nails I bite and when. They have to be a certain length now before they get the "treatment", but my nails are very short overall.

I have also wondered if it is a form of stimming.

I also pick my scalp but that started up in my adult years.

Good point you make about not even being aware you're doing it (until someone smacks my hand (telling me to stop it).

Same here (left thumb). You should see it. It's a massacre!

Are you left handed?

Oddly no, I'm right handed. But yeah, my left thumb is a massacre too! I've been especially bad with it lately.

Sometimes when we're in the car together my mother notices me picking and cleaning under my fingernails without a nail file a lot, but that's mainly because they have dirt under them. Dirty fingernails are incredibly disgusting. :) Sometimes when I have a scab or something I can't leave it alone. I'm grimly fascinated by it so it takes ages to heal and leaves an ugly scar and I'm like, "what is wrong with me?!", but I think most people have that problem. it's a wonder I didn't get gangrene a long time ago.
