my boss has been promising me health insurance for a long long time.. I make close to minimal wage and finally two months ago he tells me my health insurane coverage will start.

I thought: GREAT! Now I can actually go see a psychologist and get some therapy and perhaps some antidepressants so that I don't have to live every day with aweful thoughts.

I was given my health insurance details today. There is a deductible of $2500.... and I will not get ANY coverage AT ALL until I spend $2500 (that I don't have) OUT OF MY OWN POCKET

In other words... I will not get the therapy I need or the meds I need...

What kind of evil morbid joke is this?? what's the point of health insurance if I can't use it??

Obama... or whoever else is responsible for this needs to wake up. How can you neglect those that need help the most?

Hey Jacob,

Sorry this happened to you.

What state do you live in? In NY State, you could probably get "Healthy New York," since you make a relatively low salary. This is unless you live with your parents.

I'm not too thrilled with Obamacare either. A bad compromise between the old system and national health care.

You should research NJ. I can only do it for a few minutes.

I know you hate Obamacare--but maybe the federal "health exchanges" might have something for you.

I just Googled. There's lots on New Jersey health insurance.

I believe Obamacare subsidizes you somewhat if you make below a certain amount per year. Living alone is to your advantage--better than living with parents.

When Obamacare was implemented, my husband's employer cancelled all family members health insurance (apart from the employee himself), and since we can't afford health insurance I have been (still am) without health insurance for the first time in my life. And now even my husband has lost his health insurance because he has been sick for about 7 months and couldn't continue paying for the teamsters fees. To think he has been working for them for over 25 years ...

I can empathize. I have a high-deductible insurance plan through my employer, too, and started having health problems over the last few years. I've spent thousands on meeting my deductible each year, paying my premiums and copays. (On my plan, once you meet your deductible, you start getting charged copays for doctor's visits).

I'm thankful to have insurance, but sometimes when you are trying to meet a high deductible, it can feel like you may as well not have any coverage at all.

I hope you look into state-funded healthcare in New Jersey and qualify for some help. Good luck!

$2500 isn't too bad. My employer exchanged the health insurance they provide to a choice of either $4,000 deductible with the same premium as before, or a $10,000 deductible with no premium. I went from having good health insurance to a plan I can no longer afford to use. I really do understand where you are coming from.

This makes no sense to me. My aunt got Obama care and she said it is the best insurance she has ever had and it is much less expensive than what she had before. And another member here said that she has Obama care and she pays $95.00 a month which is half of what we pay and her diagnosis was covered as an adult with a $40.00 copay per visit which came out to a total of $80.00. I know a couple of people with Obama care and none of them have talked about these high costs. Why are yours so much higher than the people I know? I don't understand.

^^The OP said his insurance is through his employer. (And, mine is, too). We are not on Obamacare.

My understanding is that if you are able to get insurance through an employer, then you are not eligible for the subsidy through Obamacare and that makes purchasing insurance on the exchange so expensive that it usually makes more sense to stick with your employer's plan. Someone else can chime in, if I am wrong.

Please try the federal health exchange, there has to be something better on there. You have to look carefully because some of those plans have high deductibles too. I live in GA, and I got Blue Cross for around $90 a month (after my subsidy) with a $500 deductible.

Welcome to the lovely USA! Pretty much all that most health insurance plans are good for is long-term hospital care. Only the really good ones cover the routine stuff that we all need.

Wow.

I was just complaining that I only get $1000 dental and $1000 (up from $400) mental health coverage yearly (0 deductible) and have to pay over $40 a month for both. I've never needed any major health coverage but insurance has saved my mother thousands a year and that's not even counting many long hospital stays that are Government funded. Here we are complaining about the $120 ambulance fee in my province! I am literally speechless to hear how much you have to pay for health insurance. I have maybe used about $300 a year in things that are covered in the provincial health plan where I live. I remember being in the USA briefly and thinking "for God's sake don't get in an accident or sick!" How can Americans put up with this?

My first employer paid crappy wages but DID offer a great health package (even better than my union plan) but you had to work full time for 2 full years before being eligible. Took me 6 years to finally qualify but luckily I was under my parent's plan.

$120.00 ambulance fee. HAHAHAHAHA! Sorry I have to laugh. My husband had a minor concussion once and was ambulanced to the hospital. It was barely 15 miles away. No life support, no nothing, just a drive. It was $937.00 with them claiming that $600.00 of that went to pay for the gas. Our insurance paid $197.00 of that and we had to pay the rest out of pocket. If it had been an ambulance in our network they would have been forced to accept the insurance payment in full but since they were out of network they are allowed to charge whatever the H*** they want and you have to pay it.

And if you get a ticket here like any kind of ticket at all, like if you forget to turn on your headlights or something, even though the headlight ticket is $15.00 the total cost of the ticket is $116.00 because you have to pay for things like ink that printed the ticket, the person that signed it and the pen he used, and you have to pay in every ticket for the privilege of if an ambulance might have had to be called to the scene of whatever you just got ticketed for. And if by chance an ambulance had been called, you would have not only paid for that privilege in the ticket but you would have been charged to get in the ambulance, out of the ambulance and then you would have been charged for the gas. And don't ever need a helicopter, they start at $12,000.00.
