My therapist has a masters in Psychology counselling. Now I have been transferred to a therapist who has a masters in Social Work. They both work in the same community center and it?s really confusing me how can they both qualify for the exact same profession, mental health therapist, when they have completely different qualifications. So if you have experience what?s the difference between these two?

I?m being transferred as the new one is supposed to be more qualified to deal with aspergers or at least the symptoms of such. But how does a masters in Social Work qualify you more than Psychology?

Thank you

A Clinical Social Worker and a Clinical Pyschologist are very similar... the main difference is:

A Pyschologist studies the behavior and brain functions of the client. They are learning from you and seeing what makes you tick, to better understand your condition and properly diagnose you.

A Clinical Social Worker works directly with you in enforcing plans of action and a treatment plan to assist you in every day life. They are better suited for daily therapy and making recommendations to services that can assist you as well.

An old joke, what's the difference between a psychiatrist, a psychologist and a psychotic?

Psychologists build castles in the air, psychotics live in them and psychiatrists collect the rent :D

This is what happens when you have a psychiatrist with a sense of humor.

FWIW. ...

Social workers work much much cheaper, than a PhD. Never met one that was worth a damn.

In community mental health, you'll get a social worker if you are in maintenance mode. There isn't a real reason to have someone muck around for therapies, and a social worker can listen to you vent about stuff. Like a said, they make about half per hour than a PhD.

That's my experience around here.

This is usually true. However, if you're poor or on medicaid, there's pretty much no way you will ever see a psychologist. If you are dealing with trauma, trying to get accurately diagnosed, or need a specialist (like you have a lot of problems all together), I would recommend a psychologist.
