How do you setup/control your environment?
I was wondering if anybody out there would like to share any information with me and others about how you setup/arrange/configure/control your environment at home or at work to cope with sensory issues?
Here is a list of some of the things I do.
1) I only light my house with white Christmas lights or light rope strung around the parameter of the ceiling in each room. I do this to give an even ambient glow in the room and to eliminate any shadows and bright spots. BTW: I only use incandescent lights because the LED lights flicker like mad.
2) All the walls in my house are plain cream white. I have no pictures, posters, paintings or murals on the walls. Most of my furniture is cream white as well.
3) I set my HVAC's fan from AUTO to ON to create a white background noise to help mask out other noises like my neigbors dog barking and such. The constant cycling of the fan also drive me nuts as well.
There is more I could list, but I will stop there for now. OMT: I have this app on my smartphone that is an audio spectrum analyzer. I find myself using this quite a bit to check for sound in the 15-20K range. Most people can't hear anything above 15K but there are sound in the 15-20K range that can make my head hurt.
1. Earplugs
2. I try to make a meal plan because I can't eat foods at certain times
3. I have to ask someone to feel the water in the shower so I don't burn myself. A thermometer might help. I have hyposensory problems with temperature.
4. I tend to do more chores and other things at night when people are usually more quiet.
5. Sometimes, I do put my air conditioner on at night to block out other noise
6. My walls are also neutral colors. It helps when I wake up
7. I use a lamp or flashlight instead of the ceiling light.
8. I'm thinking of getting black out shades to help during my sleep time.
9. An alternative to Christmas lights could be those flame less candles.
My family know its not a good idea to spray anything, especially not insecticides, perfumes or cooking sprays anywhere near me. When I say near me, I mean anywhere in the house. Nail varnish/polish/remover is similarly unwelcome. Any form of hair dryer or vacuum cleaner can be operated but not in the same room as I am in.
I don't control these things so much as have emotional reactions that are unpleasant for all concerned and as a result the family live to accommodate me. Strangely, I enjoy those Indian incense sticks, burning rosemary and the aromas of good food are no problem at all. I wonder sometimes if all this is just psychological and not sensory overload?

On a clear day you can see forever
At work the lights above my cubicle are turned off and I have a desk lamp with a high/low control so I can control the light level. I've changed the background colour on my computer to pink to reduce the contrast. My cubicle is in a quiet corner of the floor.
At home, we've built a home on a quiet street. The house is set back on the lot away from the street and traffic (what little traffic we get). Most of the lights have dimmers so we can adjust the light level to what we want. Adjustable blinds on all the windows. Furnace has a variable speed drive so that it runs continuously, mostly on low and is whisper quiet (instead of ON-OFF-ON-OFF). We have a HEPA filter on the furnace ductwork to keeps dust and pollen in the house to a minimum.
Those are just a few of the things.
