I think I can be a bit self-obsessed but I don't think I have an invasive ego. How are you perceived?

I don't really know, I get mixed opinions from people. I just think other people, especially those who wear suits and have lots of money are egocentric (I work with lots of people like this).

Everyone on the planet is egocentric, we aspies just aren't able to hide it. Since we get it pointed out so often I'm willing to bet that we actually make ourselves more empathetic than the average person throughout a lifetime.

I must plead guilty, and I think because:
1. I really don't grok anyone else's ego,
2. I am generally the most intelligent person within a few miles radius - after a while an ego develops
3. Of course; don't expect me to operate outside my envelope

Probably, yes. I'm never sure quite how self-centered other people are, because they hide it so well. Everyone knows how I am, because I'm honest about it.

Sometimes AS control measures are seen as self-centered, like if I don't want to do something because I know it'll stress me out and I'll end up being nasty to people, I will walk away. If I say "no" like this then I am being an anti-social nuisance, apparently, but in actual fact it's a sound "damage limitation" decision.

My mom has called me self-centered before. It really depends on context.

Sometimes I do show an ego more than I mean to, but I often can't help it--it seemed right to say at the moment.

I have a pretty big ego. I've gotten very good at theater technology to the point where I'm training my profs on new equipment half the time. They're like, 'figure out how to works this, then show us.'

Yeeeah, I'm not egotistical at allllll.....

If each of us goes to a nearest open space say out in the country side or the beach and look around to the left right up an down we will observe that we are in the center of our own respective egocentric universes. So in a sense everyone is egocentric. You just can't escape it. You are in the center of your universe and I am in the center of mine.

Hmmmm I live mostly in my head, so perhaps. On the other hand, when people tell me I write well, I shrug it off because it was a gift. It wasn't something I worked at. Actually, I feel that way about many things. Still, they may see me that way because I really am not interested in their worlds unless I want to use them as character fodder. Then, I will study them. I'm interested in my husband to an extent, but I wouldn't say I am in the way an NT person would be. He seems to be far more interested in what's happening inside of me than the other way around.

I guess people HAVE accused me of things that could be called egocentric. That IS how autism got its name! Ironic but true. Look at how many autistic people behave, and you can see how the impression was made, even though it is often FALSE for a lot of higher functioning autistics.(lower functioning ones may never be able to express their real goals/intentions). Oh well, in my case, and many HAVE come to know this, even ones accusing me of being selfish, I am generally altruistic! I wish the whole world was! If they WERE, there would be NO wars, NO rich lawyers, fewer people in jail, fewer suicides, NO robberies, NO racism, NO sexism, etc.... HECK, there would even be less disease!

I have enough of an ego to know my own mind and to be confident in my abilities, but I'm not egocentric in the sense of putting down other people. I am very comfortable in my own routines.

I want to tread as lightly as I can here. I am unsure of the exact definition you intend the word "altruistic," so I will assume it is Webster's (unselfish regard for or devotion to the welfare of others). Since this "in the field" this can be defined many different ways (person's X way to belief as to the most successful method to alleviate poverty would perhaps be different then person Y) it is hard to say that any one person, objectively speaking, has all of the answers. To suggest otherwise, one could even gather, would be to engage in egotism.

oh yes I am. People say so, and I am very much aware of it too. But you know I see a huge difference between being greedy and being egocentric. I mean I do help out people and s**t, or actually care or feel bad for people, I just do things that are to my own profit, who doesnt?
