"the cause" seems like very sloppy shorthand.

Since the results of earlier studies cause to a highly polygenic system, and such systems are expected to be very sensitive to environmental factors, the result of this work is likely to be more information about the many contributing factors of small effect that result in several paths to points on the spectrum.

Regardless of the ethics of Autism Speaks' motivations, the increase in knowledge that this study will bring is a good thing.

One thing, though. The sample size may be too small. 12,000 sounds like a lot, but work on other heritable conditions like schizophrenia suggest that larger sample sizes may be required.

That's it - I'm moving to Mars. I hear it's a lot quieter there. :D

At first I used Google because there was no advertisements on their search page ... but they have changed a lot since then (eventho it might have been their plan all along), and it seems they are taking over different other websites and other things (like when they tried to monopolize the sales of books online), including youtube. And don't get me started on their annoying google glasses.

No they are not. They are not signed on to a eugenics program or looking to impose a cure on anybody.

What they are is some really talented geeks with vast data mining, server space and parallel processing capabilities who are going to turn a bit of that power over to large scale surveys of a relatively large (but still too small, if recent trends in the clinical genetics are born out) pool of genetic material. They will probably find out interesting and useful things that we will all be talking about in a year or two.

Since when did Nazis try to spread more knowledge? I

I stand corrected.

If so, they really shouldn't be teaming up with Autism Speaks. Because that's exactly what Autism Speaks wants.

http://www.autismspeaks.org/about-us

"dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism"

Prevention means selective abortion - there is no other realistic way to prevent most cases of autism.

As for a cure, given how little concern or even awareness of autistic adults they've shown, this cure will almost certainly be applied to children who are too young to make such a life-altering decision for themselves. As well as nonverbal individuals, who can't tell us if they want a cure or not. (And the varied voices of AAC users make it clear we can't assume what their answer would be if they could tell us.)

Quote:
The number of children with autism has continued to go up over the past decades, as have the costs for caring for someone with ASD.

Earlier this year, the CDC reported that 1 in 68 children in the United States has autism. A new study, published Monday in JAMA Pediatrics, estimates the lifetime cost of supporting an individual with ASD can be up to $2.4 million.

This is how the article concluded which disturbed me.

However, I think it is inevitable that if the cause is genetic that it will be found soon. The technology is neat.

I agree with you Ettina. And as I mentioned, these guys are beginning to scare me. Science is not everything, you must have wisdom as well.

The only reason they are involved is they smell MONEY! They probably think there is potential to make money with this somehow. Otherwise I doubt they'd be involved.
