Hey all you lovely people
I had my first psych appointment recently. The psych didn't do any "tests" with me to see if I may have AS, but rather asked me questions about my childhood and how I dealt with my social anxiety and OCD issues and what I had problems with etc.
During the conversation she asked me if I ever felt disconnected like my body wasn't my own or felt like I was watching myself from afar. At first I was a bit confused, I said I felt disconnected at times, and numb, but never had an out of body experience. Since then though, her mention of this made me look into dissociation and I found some information on Depersonalisation-derealisation Disorder.
What surprised me was that some of the symptoms relating to derealisation almost seemed Aspie-like in nature. What I'm saying is, people with this disorder can experience sensory sensitivity, usually linked to their emotions at the time. I also found some other parallels between AS and this disorder, which did make me wonder... Seeing as Depersonalisation-derealisation Disorder can also be present at a very young age, I'm wondering if anyone here has been diagnosed with this disorder or misdiagnosed? It would be interesting to really see what the parallels and the differences are in this disorder to AS(and whether in fact you can have both!) This disorder can accompany OCD and Social anxiety, or any other number of mental illnesses, so it wouldn't surprise me if people have trouble deciphering between a comorbid mental illnesses in someone, and AS with some comorbidities.
Here is a link of how this disorder may look like in real people and real situations: http://www.anxietycoach.com/depersonalization.html
I'm thinking maybe I'm just an aunty of a fabulous Aspie boy, but have something completely different to him? I don't know... 2 more appointments and then I'll know what the psych thinks!
