getting started and getting agrivated
To start, I am a mom with an 8 year old with ADHD but beleived to be an aspie. For a long time we beleived that he has some sort of generalized anxiety problem, it runs in the family. I started counceling for him just before Christmas. By the end of the first session, the MSW looked at me and asked if i had ever heard of Aspergers. Strangly enough, the preschool teacher that my 5 year old has is the same that my 8 year old had. I was talking to her the month before about my older son, and thats what she thought too. So i started research, and i found WP, and i am grateful beyond words. BUT HERE IS WHERE THE PROBLEM STARTS. I cant seem to get a real diagnosis done.
The councelor said i should go thru the public school system to get the psych eval done. I started bugging about that back in December before Christmas break. I have had NUMEROUS conversations with the teachers to see if the psych/social worker have been in to do any observations on my son....nothing. I have made phone calls, and FINALLY this week got to meet with the psych for the school. he wants to know why i need this eval. if my son is aspie, there is no need for an IEP and he will not receive or qualify for special services, "since there isnt any real treatment for aspergers"......WHATEVER! i told him that if its not aspergers, then i want to know what "it" is. my son was diagnosed with ADHD in kindergarten, he is now is 2nd grade. we have run the spectrum of drugs to help treat ADHD, and it seems to work short term, 3 months average. then the teachers and i start to see a decline in his work from school. so we switch things around and get the same results. the kindergarten teacher was nearly ready to test my son to see how truly intelligent he was, she had some background in working with gifted children, but didnt want to put pressure on him at such a young age. he taught himself to read, he remembers EVERYTHING, and he asks us questions when he knows the answers, just to see if we know it too! and of course if we dont know it, he will surely tell us.
my son fits the major criteria for aspies. he had a speech delay in his toddler/preschool years and received special services for that. even earlier he was in PT, and still has that clumsy looking walk. as i said before, highly intelligent, diagnosed with ADHD which seems to be a common thread, and has a difficult time with conversation, new people and situations. our family physician is fully behind me on this. the last well check we had, he pulled me into his office and said he saw all the ADHD signs, but said there was something more, acted very nervous, reacted as if someone jabbed him with a stick when the doc touched him in any way, which seems to be normal for my son.
bottom line? i am agrivated that this is taking so long. i want to know what makes my son tick. he isnt struggling in school - yet- but he is SO capable of doing so much, and i dont want him to get behind because of ----what ever this is! i have read post after post saying trust your own instincts, but why doesnt anyone belive me when it comes to this? am i really nuts? am i scrapping the barrell looking for any diagnosis?
I don't get what the problem is?
-he seems to be fine.
-do you need a 'disgnosis' just to give yourself more to do? -visit specialist, have something to talk about with family and friends?
-ADHD is bull
and so is Autism.
When your son starts drooling, then maybe you could , go the extremme of druggin him up. -I really think that your son seems fine,,, your just going to have to live with his apparaent lack of ability with certain traits --just like any other mother would with any other child - he doesn't have to be perfect!
Listen to Queen's - Bohemian Rhapsody -- it pretty much sums it up.
I'm just a poor Boy .....
Moma - just killed a man.
etc etc ,,, just be happy with what he is,,, yes you may run into more difficulty.
I am 53.
I am glad that I was raised aspie before they drug aspies.
I would rather have had the strap (which I did have) because the fear of it instilled some self control.
I wish I would have had an aspie mentor to teach me about myself, the world I must live in and how to do that.
If you check it out, you will find that the pros are often wrong about us. I for one do not want some NY wrenching my noggin when he believes we aspies do not daydream and have no sense of humor.

Erlyrisa is right, and WHAT made you think "the major criteria for aspies. he had a speech delay in his toddler/preschool years and received special services for that. even earlier he was in PT, and still has that clumsy looking walk"?
In the absense of anything other than what you said, it sounds like he is most likely HFA. AS people are supposed to be better with language and earlier, and have problems with social skills. Oh well, HFA people are more likely to get help for studies, etc... and might even do better socially.
And have you ever even asked your child why he seems to be having a problem?
