I don't have TS but I sometimg make weird noises or repeat words for no reason at all, is this a type of stemming? Does anyone else do this? 8O

I did a lot as a kid, drove my mom nuts and she cured me with her ever so subtle ridicule.I have heard other parents describe their kids doing repeating behavior...maybe stimming, maybe practicing, maybe just a heck of a lot of fun.....but not for the person trying to concentrate with some one in the back ground repeating themselves and making cat noises?

Yes, the repetition of words is called echolalia:

And when I was little, I used to make little nonlinguistic repetitive noises too. My parents bugged me about it, but for the most part I did it anyway, since concentrating on suppressing it was a nuisance.

I do that sometimes. I make lots of animal noises for no reason at all, and I repeat lots of words. It had never occured to me that these noises and words might be form of stimming. It does make sense. Nobody else I know does those things....or at least they don't admit to it.

I do it sometimes. I always figured it was just a problem because of stress, etc... I AM more likely to do it when depressed, busy, and stressed other ways. For me it isn't a stim though. At least I doubt it. It either ends quick, or I STOP it. As others have said, it IS textbook AS, but even there it isn't described as a stim.

I have echolalia, and even coprolalia sometimes. I also bark like a dog, and grunt like a pig. But I may have chronic vocal tic disorder, as a comorbid at least.

I get these rythms going on internally. If I stop one at the wrong time (no full 8 bars). I get anxiety. I tend to keep these inside now. When I was a printer, I would adjust my press' speed to mathpch my rhythm.

When i told my therapist last week about my concerns over compulsive swearing at intimate objects, e.g., shouting horrid, vile names at my vacuum cleaner or the toilet paper dispenser (because it PISSES me off when they aren't working properly), she burst out laughing. I don't think it's funny, however, especially when I do this around my kids, or if I'm in public and become annoyed at something trivial and swear aloud. She wondered if perhaps it's TS, and asked if I feel an overwhelming urge, like the words are bubbling up from within and MUST utter them to get relief, and I said "no." It's just a sudden, explosive mini-rage thing when something irks me.

Also, I yell out random words (in the privacy of my own home, even in front of company) or dialog from commercials, and sometimes repeat words that strike my fancy That *is* funny, imo. :D

I also do this.....the worst is when I am driving and get behind someone who is talking on their cell phone, tailgating me,not using their turn signals, taking up both lanes so I cant pass....It actually freaks my boyfriend out because I am a very mellow person in general but once my frustration button gets hit....watch out.....It is similiar to a disorder refered to as "explosive ??"The good thing about it is, once I do it,I dont tend to dwell as much on it(I am old school "ruminator")I exploid and expell the rage and then forget about it(until the next time it happens.)

The most recent one for me is a South Park episode with Al Gore when he keeps using the word "Serial" instead of "serious"...
He says it about 50X and I still laugh everytime I say it....maybe you can find the episode on UTUBE...it's really funny....."man bear pig"....LOL

Oh, Hamster! The things I have called my (misbehavinc) stuff. I am not proud of this, but in comparison with some other things I do, I will accept it.

Krex, I get over my mini-rages quickly, too. It's like, one minute of extreme vulgarity and feelings of hatred followed by absolute calm. I rarely stay angry over anything for long.

I'll have to check out that SP video. My current favorite "shout out" is HEAD ON, APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD!

Nutbag, it's not a good thing that the neighbors often hear me screeching "you filthy whore!" at my vacuum cleaner, but I'm happy my therapist finds it amusing, I guess.

Apologies if the above language offends anyone.

I just realized today at work that I have another uncontrollable "tic"....every time one of my bosses does something particularly illogical......like a manager yelling at us for doing exactly what a different manager told us we have to do,or forgetting to tell us some information which creates needless work for us(and then acts like it is our fault for not reading their minds).....I roll my eyes(yes, all teenagers have tourettes)and growl inaudibly (only the dogs I work with can actually hear this)in my throat......If I end up getting fired for this,I will have to use that tourettes defense.

I sing recognisable tunes, but substitute repetitive noises for the words; not sure if this counts.

Believe me it's not fun. If you could choose when, and what you tic, it might be neat. Like I can bark out the tune "Jingle Bells". But when you shout and or swear unexpectedly, it is very distressing at times. As to what the psychologist told Hamster, with me at least I don't really feel it coming on before I tic. What your therapist described sounds more like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, than Tourette Syndrome. I just utter my outbursts without thinking. I've noticed though that certain sounds seem to trigger it, like my mother clearing her throat, my father snoring, and my sister singing (she's not a very good singer). I usually try to avoid them as much as possible. unless there is something that I want or need to do around them. We touretters can get on the nerves of even the most tolerant of people. And they can get on ours as well.

I wouldn't be able to take the loss of control. I have enough trouble with my obsesssions.
