I was diagnosed with autism as a child and recently had to go through another assessment for work purposes to "confirm" the diagnosis and provide guidance for workplace accommodations.

I had this paper done by a psychiatrist who was so ridiculously unprofessional (he was in his pajamas on one occasion when I met him! Amongst other things, mostly about his manner) and I feel having that particular, poorly written diagnostic paper on my file with my employer will hinder rather than help, particularly if I move into other roles. I'd also like to have something proper on hand for personal reasons.

So here I am considering going through a formal diagnosis again and I have some concerns about what is required of me as an adult. From my understanding from this particular psychiatrists website, the process requires some involvement from family members who knew me as a child. Unfortunately I do not have that anymore, for reasons I am not able to explain on an open forum - but understand that they are not dead. I am reluctant to provide the diagnostic paper from the last psychiatrist for background information because it is poorly written in terms of its contents and lack of detail.

Have any adults here had a diagnosis without participation of family? I know the basics about my childhood (age I started walking, talking, motor skills and so on)

I too would like to know this, as I also am not in touch with any living relatives. I have one friend who was in primary school with me, but when I tentatively asked him what if anything he remembers of what I was like then, he said he has virtually no memory of me except that I was "very quiet" in class.

That would be my selective mutism stage. Seriously! But that's all he had, and it wouldn't be enough to warrant an evaluator interviewing him about my childhood.

I was diagnosed as an adult (in my mid-forties) without the participation of my family. My therapist did have me go through a lot of my childhood stuff but I was the only one she interviewed.
