It's certainly on the Autistic Spectrum
I find that it is fairly common for people to exhibit symptoms of "classic autism" in early childhood, then "change" to Aspergian-type symptoms as one gets older. I am one of those people.
The kid in "Elijah's Cup" is another.
Possibly Temple Grandin as well.
I'm thinking that Asperger's Syndrome (though not an official "disorder" in DSM V) is a form of autism where verbal abilities, at times, overtake visual abilities. I am one of those people whose visual abilities are limited, yet who have fairly substantial verbal abilities. I believe it is incorrect to assume that all Aspergians had "normal" speech acquisition--that was a sticking point which was probably much-criticized when DSM IV held sway.
