Has this ever happened to you? I think this also happens with parents. I looked up videos of "recovered autistics" just for fun. A lot of them still seemed very odd. I even know some kids who are supposed to be recovered. They're still in special ed and they still look odd.

1) How can you be a recovered autistic?
2) Not sure how you consider this 'fun'.

Be careful there. I'll bet that those "so called" recovered autistic's may be enduring a emotional hell and have to keep doing it just to be normal. There is a price to pay for that you know.

I am skeptical about someone being a recovered autistic. If they still need an IEP or a 504 Plan and a teacher's aide, how can they say they are recovered? Do they have their own view on what autism is and if their kids lose a certain traits, they are no longer on the spectrum? What is their new label now?

I have lived life on the Spectrum, now comfortably self-diagnosed.

I have my A game. For example, I've done well at many classes (not all) and I've done well working at H&R Block including matter-of-factly disclosing to my clients the main negatives of the loan and bank products. The company wants you to technically disclose but not really.

I do need my down time, which sometimes includes stimming.

I'm trying to add skills for when I don't have my best energy but still want to get things done and be open to the world. I like to think of this as engagement, not conformity.

==========

One of my big issues is my voice. I have a voice which is more nasal than average, and people stereotype it in all kinds of ways.

1. Some parents believe that ABA can cure autism.
2. I just wanted to see if they were actually recovered.

Do you believe, ABA can change the brain structure?

Some proponents may claim too much and think they can. Look, ABA is just a set of behaviorist techniques. If it's done with reasonable skill and in respectful fashion where the client wants to make the change, then maybe it can replace distracting or negative habits with good habits. But even then, it's probably not a hundred percent deal. And that's okay. That's all part of life.

If a therapist or counselor makes a religion out of ABA, then it's probably going to be counter-productive.

That was my point.
