Service Dogs for People With AS

Hey! I'm just wondering if any of you heard of service dogs for people with AS? If so, how will it benefit adults with AS?

if the dog had a container around their neck (like the traditional St. Bernards) that held a sound canceling ear set, and several cookies.

I would imagine a dog that would help with panic attacks or generalized anxiety would benefit an adult with AS. I know it would for me, but we have a family dog, so I can't take him everywhere.

In the United States, to be a service animal, the animal MUST be trained to do one or more specific tasks to assist the disabled person. As it stands now, I think there are only service dogs and occasionally service horses (miniature horses for those who are allergic to dogs) and service horses are fairly limited.

Keeping a dog for emotional support does not make it a service dog.

Claiming a dog is a service dog when it has not been trained to do actual tasks to help you with your disability is a crime that could result in some fairly serious consequences. For example, I understand that it can result in the loss of certain federal benefits.

So the questions become:
1) Is Autism a disability?
2) Precisely which tasks would the dog be trained in to help you with your disability?

For what it's worth, people with real service dogs are appalled at people who falsely claim that their dog (or other animal) is a service dog. Such false claims often put all service dogs in a bad light and make it tougher for their real service dogs to be accepted by those who have had bad experience with bogus service dogs.

Are there such things as helper monkeys, or did I make those up in my head based on stories of people having helper monkeys?

I don't think aspies can have service dogs, since we can do everything for ourselves. A psychiatric service dog does the same kind of tasks as any other type of service dogs, only the people can't do it for psychiatric reasons rather than physical.
I think all we can get is what is called emotional support animal.

My question now is what is an emotional support dog? Since we can't have service dogs. I agree with you guys. I don't think we need service dogs but we can have one for emotional support. I love dogs though.

Emotional support dogs are fine for when you are at home. But don't expect to be able to take it with you into stores and restaurants.

One that attacks people that get too close to me sounds pretty awesome, I must say.

Which would mean that it was definitely not a service dog.

And you would be held legally responsible for its attacks as well as ensuring that the dog would be killed.

Service dogs cannot be permitted to be aggressive.
