For me, while having Aspergers has been tough, it has also helped me out in several ways. For one thing, not being able to communicate with other people has forced me to find ways to enjoy my own company. Now, after a lot of practice, I can honestly say I enjoy my own company. I can have a good time just being by myself. It could be reading a book, solving a puzzle, researching some topic of interest, or just relaxing on the deck with a beer. It's really nice to be able to enjoy you're own company. I would much rather be the type of person who can enjoy his own company, rather than some one who has all the attention in the world, and then at the end of the day is terrified of being alone.

Being different in general has also made me more aware of the evil that exists within the power structure straddling modern society, something most "normal" people are seemingly blind to.

What about you? What do you like about being an Aspie? How has it helped you in you're personal or work life?

For me it has made me view everyone (myself included) as not being in control of the cirucmstances of your being or the environment you were born into

I like the way I'm really sensitive towards other people.

I've not always liked that about me but I'm learning how to use it to my own advantage these days.

Well written, Coolguy! Your statements reflect my personal life.

My AS ability for precision in my work (law and politics) has helped a lot. Among family and friends, however, that talent provokes resentment. Oh, well.

I like some of the ways I experience the world, and I like being able to hyper focus on something, especially things I am learning or making. I often surprise myself with the things I make :) I have found that because I have a different thought process and the way I pick up on little details about the world, and the way I make connections that others seem to always miss. I sometimes solve problems that other people can't.

Simply having autism is somewhat an advantage in the field I am going into. I want to be a special education teacher, but specifically with kids with very low functioning autism. For instance, there have been times when I have been volunteering at special a needs school or when I have been working as a camp counselor, when I have quickly figured out why one of the kids is upset (aspies and auties both) when no one else knew why. I guess I just have a better shot at guessing correctly in these situations because I have some of the same problems.

What I like about Asperger?

My intelligence.
My curiosity.
My interests.
My hyper focus.
My sharp senses.
My memory.
My ability to "disappear" socially.
My honesty.
My attention to details.
My stubbornness.

Asperger gives me great possibilities to succeed intellectually. When I get interested in anything I am soon becoming an expert in this field. And I love being an expert. I love to know more than others. I love explaining stuffs to people.
Also - when I made my mind to do something I usually get it to the end because I am stubborn, my brain just doesn't get off the track.
And I tend not to care about other people much. I have an ability to totally ignore them if I am busy with something else or I just choose to. As long as they are silent and out of my sight they could as well not exist to me, even if they are in the same room and are watching me behind my back. I can easily make my social anxiety irrelevant this way.
My senses make me hear danger/interesting stuffs faster than anyone around me so I don't miss anything. And I see better in the darkness than most people. Seeing them walking blindly makes me laugh.
And my memory... I never ever failed a test even if I didn't learn at all because my long term memory is just awesome. Once I learn anything it stays there, waiting to be used even after many years.

One thing I like about having aspergers is that not having material things isn't much of an issue for me and I think that trivial matters such as the aforementioned are deemed just that and are not much of a concern.
I also find solace in knowing that I am not common or ordinary and although aspergers isn't exactly a rare occurrence, I don't really think that all aspies share the same symptoms so in a sense we are each unique from the norm.
Plus I can sit and watch the world in any aspect and be amazed at it especially when it rains as the colours become more vivd and alive.
I really like living in this world and I think it truly is beautiful, its just I can't stand some of the people.

I like the fact that i enjoy to try to understand people. Although i'm bad at expressing my feelings and consoling the others i see myself as a very comprehensive person.
My attention to details and the differentiate point of view that i analyze some stuff have helped me a lot.
Also the fact that i don't depend so much on others to do the stuff that i like. For example, i've saw people that just can't go to the cinema alone even if they want to watch the movie lol I can go to a walk on the park, go to a restaurant to eat or to the shopping with just my music as a company.

Interesting topic, coolguy and I thoroughly agree with your observations. Along with the enjoyment of own company, and also the limited reliance on material things already commented on, I like the ability to see through a lot of waffle using clear logic and clear thinking. It has stood me in good stead down the years (even if the downside is not really being able to fit into a group situation at work, where I understand you're meant to achieve the same outcome but by a much more painful process than just thinking hard about it yourself!)

I like my sensitive feelings towards people who are different, because I've learned not to hurt others at an early age. I also like my ability to enjoy my own company. I enjoy the intense focus that I have while getting things done whether they're chores or projects. I like the fact that I have a mind of my own and can make up my own mind about things I like and things I want to be involved with. I also like my unique way of looking at the world.

I like that being aspie makes me be more open minded and understanding of others, and I am very curious to learn what makes people tick. I like that I can look at a dispute from all sides clearly and not end up taking one persons side over another. Also I worry a little less about what others might think of me now, as in I feel less pressure to fit in and conform as much, as I am more comfortable with myself now as an individual (now that I know I'm aspie :) )

I also like my attention to detail and tendency to notice/be drawn to details that others would usually miss or overlook. And I feel as if I can "connect" easily with animals, almost as if they are drawn to me.

Also, like others have said I can enjoy my own company better nowadays too.

I had to walk my own road. With people, but alone (if that makes any sence). It is a different view. Gives me something to add. Sometimes the most difficult roads are the ones best traveled. Sometimes I do not like my life very much, sometimes too much, but it has been an incredible journey. Many stories I cannot, and do not want to tell. :P . If I had to do it all over again, I probably wouldn't want to. The life I have lived has not, and could not be textbook by any means, but it has made me one of the best at what I can do. I have an extremely mechanical mind. Now I just need to figure out how to keep a job.

Neat thread. It is finding the good in people.

I like that "fitting-in" and/or "being one of the crowd" has NEVER been a priority for me. :D
