What music helps you relax?

Tell me anything, but I am particularly interesting in music that is complex and instrumental. I am very sensitive to dissonance in music and cannot handle too much of it left unresolved. I really need the music to be balanced well. I am very sensitive to music overall.

I've recently had a shutdown episode caused by music. I would like to solve it with music.

I assume that there are physics involved in why music can do what it does. I may need to speak with a music theorist.

Please help!

Personally, I prefer Russian folk, specifically Galina Baranova, when I am trying to unwind. It's not all that complex, but the way she sings it is soft and gentle.

For complex, non-dissonant music, I would suggest Joseph Marx's Herbstsymphonie or an orchestral work by Peteris Barisons. I am very sensitive to music as well; I cannot stand Picardy thirds. I am fond of minor keys in all genres of music I listen to, rock, metal or classical.

When I'm overloaded by people (usually after a visit from my mother) I have to listen to heavy rock/metal/screamo loud for about an hour to exorcise the lingering spirit of Nasty.

I love Loreena Mckennitt. She is my go to when I am stressed and need to relax. Complex and instrumental, I have to give some thought to that. I would probably tend towards Mozart symphonies but I don't know if you would consider that complex. This may sound strange but one of my favorite pieces of music when I need to relax is the soundtrack to The Empire Strikes Back.

I am going to check them out. They sound like I would like them.

Any old S/NES or Gameboy soundtracks, stuff like Final Fantasy 4, Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening, Pokemon Yellow, etc.

Tchaikovsky, dark psytrance, hardcore techno, breakcore.

Just alleviated a panic attack with Venetian Snares and Faith No More at work.

If you want something complex and melodic, with resolution etc, go for Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. Also, Sigur Ros' Agaetis Byrjun pacifies me but sometimes it takes me tol far and I end up in an altered state that can make me panic. Good luck!

Oh my, I think you just put my brain back together. I didn't like Herbstsymphonie, but I think I am now in love with what I've found of Peteris Barisons.

I do like Tchaikovsky. I must dig that CD out now.

Thank you everyone and keep them coming! It's interesting to hear from everyone.

I cycle through favourite songs that I use to relax in times of stress; at one point it was "Let it Go" from the Frozen soundtrack  Right now I'm into Jean Jacques Goldman; he's French. I really like the melodies for a lot of his songs (Sous le Vent (Downwind) is one of my current favourites) and attempting to translate the lyrics using the remnants of my high school French education is a good distraction.

Owl City and Joy Electric. Some happy/bubbly music can always take off the edge.

When I'm overwhelmed I listen to Enya. It is as though doing this resets my nervous system. I keep music on my iPhone and ear buds in my pocket.

I love Enya too. Sometimes when I need to de-stress I listen to Il Divo as well.
