Read a short story today about a teen with Autism.
Today, we read a short story in school by Chris Crutcher called 'Telephone Man'. the story is that there is a teenager named Jack at the age of about 17 with (unmentioned) autism, but his father raised him as a racist and when Jack is getting bullied a black kid saves him, and then Jack re-thinks his racism.
overall the character was made pretty accurately, but you could also tell it wasn't written by someone on the spectrum because he could read body language and stated that a meltdown is a defence mechanism but other than that, i found him quite relatable.
which makes things better is that we watched the HBO movie Temple Grandin before we read the short story which is one of my favourite movies, but my teacher kept saying Temple had Aspergers which we all know she had HFA. anyways it was a interesting unit.

We also know the DSM was changed due to the pressure to make those big bad Aspie elitists just go away. How much more erasure of people with Asperger's Syndrome do you want? We dont all know Temple didn't have Asperger's, what we do know is Autistic elitists all but exiled those with Asperger's Syndrome from the community. Placing Aspies around those with HFA has led to Aspies being hurt by parents aggressively pushing the acceptance of upsetting Autism behavior on to them. When Aspies wanted to be seperated from those with Autism, the DSM was changed so they could not free themselves from being around Autistic people who aggravate their sensory issues. If those with Autism can't find acceptance, they'll see no one else can as well.
