Is anyone here from Canada, do you receive any kind of disability benefits for Asperger's ? I am moving back there next year and wanted to know if I may be eligible for assistance.

I asked my friend who lives there since she gets the benefits (not for AS since she doesn't have it). She said there's a possibility you could, but it depends on the severity of your condition.

She also says this as well:

"[10/3/14, 11:26:06 AM] Name withheld for privacy: Tell her that she has to request it a bit ahead to make sure to receive an amount for the start of a month. Example. If she moves in June, she could request it around May.
[10/3/14, 11:26:28 AM] Name withheld for privacy: Even April."

Thanks for finding that out for me, I will look into it further for sure.

I'm in Ontario Canada.

I don't know about how easy it would be to get Disability for Asperger's as I am not diagnosed yet.

But I applied for Disability years ago for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/fibromyalgia and was turned down. At the time I could still work shortened hours. Now I cannot (I've developed POTS as well.)

My doctor admits getting approved for Disability is very difficult. He said he had a patient with a severe head injury who couldn't get it. :(

I'm hoping that if I could get in with this particular psychiatrist who specializes in autism in adults and get my diagnosis, perhaps I'd be approved for Disability based on both conditions - Asperger's and POTS.

little blue jay - what is the name of this psychiatrist, which city are you in? If that works for you, please let me know, because maybe I could get referred by them as well, since I also suffer from depression and anxiety besides AS.

It was the Asperger's Society of Ontario who suggested him to me. As my first psych doctor was useless and did no testing on me.

He is in Hamilton. His name is Dr. Marc Woodbury-Smith. My doctor says he's sent a referral. Haven't been contacted by them yet though :? I phoned them twice this past week and left messages ....

Thanks, little blue jay. I will keep him in mind. Please let me know how it goes once you get in to see him. Specialists can take a long time to see unfortunately.

little_blue_jay, I'm not in Canada, but I just wanted to let you know that it MIGHT BE the way it is here in the States, and here one is ALWAYS turned-down the first time they apply. My uncle had Multiple Sclerosis and was turned-down. Also, here it takes about 2 and a half to 3 years to get it. Don't be discouraged, if you don't get it the first time----keep tryin', after you get your AS dx!!

Yeah I know. They could phone me back at least though :? If only to acknowledge that they've received the referral and my messages....

Yes, I've heard that's the way it is here too. In retrospect I should have just kept pursuing it and kept applying. I've since heard that it takes sometimes 5 to 6 repeated applications or disputing of their decision... apparently they don't take you serious the first time :(

Plus with my CFS diagnosis I guess I was kind of in subconscious denial of that, and kept hoping deep down that I'd get better over time, but I've only gotten worse :(

Oh :( Well my case is different in that I do have other medical problems; I hope that perhaps with the CFS/fibromyalgia/not-yet-diagnosed-but-pursuing-it POTS issues that I could eventually get approved for those...... not *just* for Asperger's...

i think they (social security) must have an agreement with the american bar assoc. to turn people down for disability so they will be forced to hire a lawyer to threaten to sue the gov't. for benefits. my wife had to hire a lawyer, and all they did was sit in on one phone call. for that, they receive 25% of the initial payment (which of course increases due to the time it's being stretched out farting around with the lawyers), standard fee and payed to them directly by social security.

I was told by my lawyer you can do it only 3 times. The 3rd time for appeal you get a new judge. The amount of money you had to pay was either 25% of the settlement or 6k. or whichever is lower. . This is for SSDI. Don't know about SSI or the Canada system.

The disability system in the U.S. is a joke as far as I can tell. I've tried, but am afraid I'll never get benefits. It's like the gov't wants you to be absolutely broke and miserable just to meet the income requirements; in their eyes, that barely-functioning autistic guy making $1,070 a month is doing just fine. But if he makes $1,069 or less, then all of a sudden he qualifies for help. Ridiculous. But even if he's met the income limit and has the nerve to apply, no problem; they can just automatically reject him the first (or second, or third) time he tries. They'll only take him seriously if he gets a lawyer he can't afford and endures the severe mental stress of appealing the decision. And even then they'll give out as little as possible.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's just an understanding between the government and the lawyers. Just like private insurance, these benefits are not really given out to help others. No one who cares about helping people has that much money to spare. The benefits are there to give the impression of help, and are not actually given to people unless they can fight and raise hell every step of the way. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, but the body that rusts and decays in silence is ignored.
