So, tonight I got asked out on my first date. It was from someone in my social skills group (which doesn't have a policy against extra-group fraternization), and I need some advice about what to do. I've never been on a date before, but a lot of the pressure is taken off by the fact that he's also autistic, so we won't have as much trouble understanding each other as we would if he were NT. The first date is just going to be casual, in a coffee shop, but I still need help; what do I do, talk about, etc?

Talk about the latest Star Trek reboot which I think was a travesty of all the original series stood for. See how he responds and take it from there.

Talk about your interests, the weather or just ask each other questions.

I'm not very experienced but I think those would be good topics.

there's a pretty obvious topic of conversation - your social skills group!

Why don't you ask him, and then you can both talk about what people talk about on a date.

I remember reading somewhere a long time ago, that to have a good conversation with others, you should ask them questions to get them talking. This also takes the conversation burden off of you. You ask them about their interests, their work, their life, and their family. If something makes them uncomfortable, you drop that particular line of questions, like if they have family problems, just don't pursue that once you see it bothers them. Turn the conversation into a different, "safer" direction by asking questions about something else. All this works whether you are on a date, or at a party, or in any other conversational situation.

Good luck on your date, and have a good time! :D

If it's me I'd be in a "collecting information" phase. I'd probably ask a bunch of "deal breaker" questions first, like if they smoke, drink, gamble, belong to certain cult...etc. I wouldn't want to fall in love with the wrong type. :) Get the info you really want to know first, then you can relax and talk about other stuff.

*I understand this probably breaks all sorts of social rules. :D
