Quote:
"We're using very powerful magnetic fields to change literally how the brain is working, the frequencies of which the brain is running," said Dr. Robert Silvetz, chief science officer and physician liaison at Brain Treatment Center. Known as neuromodulation, the treatment is typically used to help children with autism by stimulating areas of the brain that don't work the way they should. Doctors at the Brain Treatment Center believe it can also help veterans by restoring parts of the brain affected by war.

If this is legit, then it could mean relief for some people; but if it is just another gimmick being used to exploit desperate people, then it should be outlawed.

Opinions, please?

The last time I read about neuromodulation I was able to be convinced that it works, but the results were not permanent and required substantial amounts of the treatment to have any effect.

That sounds like some kind of variant of rTMI to me. It's kind of new and we still don't know what it's good for, but there are some hints it might be a good substitute for ECT when treating depression. Autism... I haven't a clue.

Could be quackery, could be non-quackery. I'ma wait for the studies.

I meant to click "bogus" but hit "bonus" by mistake; the words are too similar! Anyway, I think it's nonsense; magnets can't affect the brain in any meaningful way; if they did, we'd probably have the migratory instincts of birds, or have our brains completely scrambled every time we entered an MRI machine or CAT scanner. "Magnet therapy" has been around for donkey's years, and no scientific study has ever been able to validate its use in curing neurological problems, in fact, every study ever conducted proved that the magnets had no effect whatsoever, beyond any mild placebo effects.

I am a little skeptical, since as far as I know at this point it is impossible to look at someones brain and figure out exactly where the 'problem' is for mental disorders in order to stimulate those specific parts. They still don't even know exactly how a depressed brain looks, then you have to factor in everyone's brain is different to begin with which also makes it more complicated.

I am all for anything that relieves suffering, especially from PTSD...but some of the claims in the article seem a little far fetched. It could be the treatment does help but the writer of the article was somewhat inaccurate about how it works.

This is transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) based on research of Yi Jin, who is psych professor at UC Irvine.
Trials like this should be pursued to see if non-medicinal, non-invasive things like TMS has positive effects for people with mental disorders not just autism.
TMS has big effects on brain and is not like sticking a bar magnet on your forehead.
Whether or not humans have magnetoception is uncertain (and is the topic of one of my research projects).

I want to see where the research goes.
