If you were to build a haven for aspies, what would it be like? What kind of environment? What would you be able to contribute?
I was thinking...it would be nice to have a haven or center for aspies...where young aspies can be inspired and adult aspies can rest and get motivated...We could have like...annual Asperger's conferences! And it wouldn't be run by NTs, from an observer's or outsider's perspective, but from the insider's perspective...meaning run by and for the people who are actually going through the condition... especially, inspiring young aspies would be a great thing to do...Also...(I know it's not simple...) but the support could extend to the general autism population...because...the way I feel is that somehow aspies stand in the middle of NT's and autistic people (although we belong in the autistic spectrum), and could actually work to help both... anyway...
I could contribute by donating all my books, CDs, DVDs...
Any other ideas or thoughts?
Step One:
A Virtual Haven:
We aspies take control of our own fates. We build a phase one websitw with our own (designed by and for aspies) quizzes. We determine the true definition of AS and the people who are aspies.
We know the professionals have us wrong. We could get it right!
Then another set of questions: What have aspies as individuals learned during their lives and so have to teach other aspies What do we, again as individuals, wish we knew and at what point in our lives would we have wanted to know it.
Then as the second phase we develop an informational site ny and for aspies. How to know if you are, and tips and techniques for living AS in the NT world.
We could make our lives into havens.
Then let's build real havens too.

cynicism occurs immediately upon pressing your brain's start button
as it was for Lisa Simpson --the Library. ..but there should also be an opposing 'High Sensory' area to teach us the opposite of what we are likely to want to learn .. so maybe a nightclub with an indoor recreation area next door would do the trick for the ASpies that want to,, practise thier environmental skills.
I don't find solace in groups.
I would like a world where people call things such as Asperger's by their proper medical names, rather than using euphemisms, such as "Aspie." In the old days, they called people with disabilities and differences by a number of awful names, such as "mongoloid," "cripple," or "spastic," or "just plain nuts."
My haven would be a place where I could be in the company of my cats.
What about Australia?
I can see a haven in Australia!
I picture it in a remote location in the desert. I can also see the building style of the place; It is a modern style of building. In the style of... what's that Architect's name? Frank Lloyd Wright. that's it!
However, before you reach this Frank Lloyd Wright style house, you go through a gate where you need to input a pin number. Afterwards, there is a large green lawn and you can just barely see the house, shining in the sunlight. The door is very intricate in design. It shows the heads of many thought to be Aspies all over the door, with Albert Einstein at the top center of the door. Open the door and you are now in a large room with a fountain flowing through it. Although, the fountain goes even upward into the loft of the house. You go up the stairs and there is a shoot where water is flowing and you can see many coins from all over the world inside the fountain; people made a wish obviously. Finally, you find your room in the loft and it is in a large hallway, but before that, there is a lobby and to the left of the stairs is a statue of Dr. Attwood at a stream, the same stream that goes downward to the entrance lobby of the house and makes a water fall.
How's that?

Dunno Mate - your definetly welcome ... but it's not like the Airport is just a dirt Runway, like many interantionals presume!!
-The desert,,, not as remote as you think - besides ,, the indigenous 'own' it anyway.
-Can you handle 40+ degrees day after day - I think you would drink yourself into a stupor,, like many of the locals in such climates.
-I like the idea of Alabama - we could call it sweet home, and play the ong over and over again... and from what I have heard ,marry at 14.

Those are just generalizations, not everyone marries at 14 in Alabama, think about the upper-class.

I love the fountain part...desert as a location is appealing too! Oasis in a desert would be ideal...

I think spread over the land, some central, but a lot of small quite cottages with gardens. Broadband is as close as I want to get to the world. I would like a world to interact with, when I wanted to.
Haven to me is decompress, thick stone walls, oil light, wood fires, and Broadband.
I want rural, no trucks rolling by ten miles away, not on an aircraft flight path, unless they are very high.
I like the edge of the desert. Where there is ground water it is not hard to be self supporting.
Some need a home and employment now, others a vacation spot, and others a place to retire.
I have several small business projects, a bit more than I can develop on my own. Job creation is not a problem.
Bringing our combined abillities to bear on any problem will produce several solutions, I do not hold to right answers.
Such land is available in large tracts. I like Bilbo's house, small and comfortable, a bit of garden, neighbors not close or far. The goals and economics of this group are low. I favor ownership within a planned community, lavish by our standards, for $10,000 with terms, none of that other world stuff, and social usefulness should be enough to pay it off.
All media is moving to the web, and our demographic, 1,000,000 in the US, would pay. We have the talent.
I favor simple self government, let us make Alex King.
If a hundred would like to own a cottage in Aspie Acres, which would use up several hundred acres, that would be enough to buy several square miles for cash. Land starts at $500 an acre, most of the building cost is labor, so the investment would be reinvested in ourselves.
We can have the degree of isolation needed, and the degree of social support. There will be places for people like me, a cave, and places for the more social. I would think cottages, hidden by trees, and a village within walking distance.
Some do seek to gather around centers, I want the best of a CNC machine shop. I relate to tools and machines, and to others who use them. I would stay far from music.
The area I am looking at has limestone, sandstone, and granite, with the right tools it becomes blocks.
It is a better retirement option than most of us dinos face. A chance for others to vacation and see what an aspie culture would develop, and together, we all consume, so we can supprt employment.
I think it would be economicaly sucessful. It can buy up more square miles and grow.
Currently it is poor ranch country. A place comes with a fair house, good well, shop buildings, a few windmills, stock tanks. It is a good base to build from. The land has been poorly managed and is in brush. It can be cleared and planted in native grass, as it was 150 years ago. The soil will support fruit trees, grapes, and maybe olives. Small areas of good soil can produce row crops. Walled house gardens can have made soil, and a long growing season.
A major airport is near, as is Amtrak, and Greyhound comes near.
Other than a national sewer control law, there are no building codes.
It does not have to all be on one piece of land, several scattered clusters in an area would work.
Tourism and conventions do bring in money. The National headquarters of The Aspie Union could be there.
Interaction with the rest of the world can be on our terms.
At 500 votes we become the dominate political force, taking over a Courthouse, Sheriffs Department, Fire District, School District, Library, County Roads, Water, Sewer and Garbage, and Social Services. Most of these are outside funded jobs. Funding amounts to millions a year.
I have already taken to publishing and am cranky enought to put out the County Newspaper. I would think it would have a national subsciption base.
With an aspie centered school district, we can buy up land, redevelop, create industry, and bring in families with aspie children. All of those services so hard to find elsewhere would be the norm, and improving. With the families we gain a professional class.
I like gaming, I play to win.
This is an idea that I've had even before learning about Asperger's. I think that it can work. Personally, I favor the mountains. Really, what I'm seeing is more of a compound within reasonable access to a city though (why? there are resources in a city which some would actually need access to). And I'm not sure that it would have to be all that exclusive - just with a decently high proportion of us, so that we would not be so isolated.
My original thought had been something like a high-tech feudal commune. Maybe something like a research institute. To get it to work though, we have to come up with a product (and buisness model) which works for the outside world. I'm working on it.
