For me, living in a very densely populated highly urban area is probably one of the most frustrating things about my life with AS. I grew up in a semi-rural area where you could quite easily find places to escape the crowds and be totally alone in a place outside of your home/bedroom/office/etc. It also happened to be the state with the largest expanses of untouched wilderness in the lower 48 (I'm talking of course about the great State of Idaho!) Now, however, I reside in what is probably the most densely populated area of the nation, Southern California. There are 3x as many people living in my tiny little coastal county as there were in the entire state of Idaho when I moved here 12 years ago (population density in my native area is currently 52 people/sq mi, compared with 7,208 where I live today). People, noise, buildings, congestion, lights, sounds, and urban everything is EVERYWHERE. Even in the "remote" areas (such as they are), you cannot get away from people or congestion and just enjoy nature the way it was supposed to be. The constant stimulation makes things very difficult at times and is something I have yet to find a way to overcome on a frequent-enough basis. Semiannual trips to the Mojave are about as close as I can get, and that's a pain.

So I'm curious, what is the population density where you live? Do you also find that living in a populated area causes overstimulation or other difficulties? How do you cope? Please hit the poll.

The population density for the county I live in is 91 people per square mile.

I grew up here, have lived here all my life except college and don't know if I could handle living in a more populated area.

Even when I went away to college, I chose a small school in a small town near a national forest because I did not want to be in a highly populated place. I found it totally overwhelming to live on campus, even at a small school. I used to escape into the forest a lot.
