There are many free decibel meter apps available.

I have monitored my extended family (a frequently overwhelmingly loud bunch) and their "low level" is right around 85 decibels. Typical activity ranges from 70-110 decibels. Anything above 85 causes hearing loss! This helps me realize that I'm not just crazy oversensitive...everyone else has desensitized themselves to something that is actually harming them.

My preferred comfort zone is under 55 decibels. What's yours?

Probably in the range of 60-70 Decibels--depending upon the sound in question. I like some sounds better than others. I like low-pitched sounds better than high-pitched sounds.

-90 sustained* is uncomfortable to me at about 40 minutes; my ears feel full and odd for a day after
-150 impulse** is around what doesn't bother me much; my ears ring a little louder than usual for a bit, but they don't hurt
-several voices in an enclosed area hurts my head, though my ears don't feel uncomfortable (perhaps auditory processing problems)

Don't know the number, but most everything needs to be muffled. I love hard rock and metal....but muffled :P

Less than 70; I can tolerate normal conversations (~60 dB) but nothing like vacuums, hair dryers, toilets, etc.

I don't know about decibel levels but I do know quick, load, unexpected noises shock me.

^^^ same. I have hyperacusis and tinnitis. The hyperacusis does allow me to listen in on conversations if I pay attention. 8O
